About Sustained (The Legal Briefs #2):

22926485A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.

When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.

Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.

Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office.

Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.

And that — that, I know how to do.

Our review:

1: How great was it getting to immerse yourself in Stanton, Sophie, Jake, and Brent again?

Jenn: Oh my gosh, I love this group so hard! This is one of those groups that I want to be a part of and it feels so good to have them back.
I love how connected they are with each other – they are true friends! And god, Brent makes me laugh – I’m so wanting his story!
.
Wendy: Oh my word!! I have missed these guys SO much!! I feel like I know them so well, like I went to college with them or something. Reading Sustained was liking coming home and spending a week with your old friends.
And Brent, I made so many notes throughout both books, just expressing how much I am dying for his story. You give me a character that is a likable, physically disabled man, and the author can make it work like Emma Chase has so far, and you have given me pure happiness in print!

2: What did you think about Chelsea? And the kids…were they not kick ass or what?!?

Jenn: I have to admit that I’m not that much of a kid person and sometimes I find them distracting in books but not these kids, oh how I loved this crazy bunch! They are obviously dealing with a tragedy, but they really are a fantastic family. I loved that each kid truly was an individual in this story! (At least that’s how it felt to me) I loved the twins, Rory and Raymond – god I laughed so hard at some of the stuff they did! And yes, there is such a part of me that just wants to say “hi” over and over again!
Chelsea is an amazing character and I loved her instantly. She gave up her entire life in an instant to raise her 6 nieces and nephews. I can’t even imagine what that would be like, or the crazy it would bring. But she does it brilliantly, not perfectly, but brilliantly.
 .
Wendy:  I stuck so many notes in the book, trying to figure out which kid was my favorite. (It’s still a toss up between Regan and Rosaleen!) All I can say is the author must be the coolest mother ever! The way she wrote these kids, and their relationships with the adults, made you fall in love with them AND the story so much more, on such a deeper level. I can’t remember the words HI and NO ever being so funny!!
And Chelsea. Man, what’s NOT to love about her?!? Totally selfless, kind, compassionate, funny…I could go on forever about how amazing she is. She is not only my favorite female Emma Chase character, she is one of my ALL-TIME favorites!! She is a character I wouldn’t change a thing about.

3: What about Jake?

Jenn: Jake, oh I can’t even…he is so much wonderful. He’s used to his ordered and attachment free lifestyle until one incident thrusts him into Chelsea’s life. Chelsea and those kids are going to change his entire world. I absolutely loved this journey for Jake! He didn’t have an easy start and it wasn’t until someone stepped in and gave him the right guidance that he found his path. I love that he sees that in Rory and his struggles too. It just melted my ever-loving heart. I think Jake has become one of my favorite characters, his heart is just amazing and although he makes mistakes, I know he’s a good guy. Two words: ONE DIRECTION!
I feel like he is the perfect combination on alpha, funny and loving. And he’s the perfect match for Chelsea. The two of them together are just perfection!
.
Wendy: *sigh* Jake. I NEVER thought I’d say this, but he just gave Drew a run for his money. As of now, he is definitely my favorite. Under the outer shell that makes him sometimes come across a little asshole-y, he is kind, and sweet, and considerate. And wow, we CANNOT leave out hot AF!! The man just has it all!!

4: Where does Sustained stand in the rankings of Emma Chase’s books?

Jenn: I think this may be my new favorite Emma Chase book, I’ve loved them all, but I think she hit every mark with Sustained. It was funny, touching and just all around perfect! I fell so hard for this entire crew and I just want more! This is that kind of book that I want to read over and over again because it’s just that wonderful.
 .
Wendy: I’ve got to say it, Sustained is hands down my new favorite Emma Chase book. I’m usually the girl that the first book  that I read by an author, that one book that makes me fall in love with them, that’s the one that will always be my favorite. But not in this case. I still love Tangled, but for me, Sustained just took my love for her writing to a whole new level. I love it. HARD!!

5: Overall thoughts?

Jenn: 5 huge perfect stars! I loved this book, it’s just that simple. It was such a great story and so well written. Emma Chase does such an amazing job of creating such full characters, making you love them so hard and get completely lost in their story. I will be a fan for life!
 .
Wendy: LOL..In case there was any doubt, I LOVED Sustained! It was seamless,  and hilarious, and heartfelt, and SO endearing! I would not have changed a word in it. And you know what excites me the most? If Sustained was THIS good, how freaking awesome is Appealed going to be?!?  Definitely a 5 star read. No question!!

PREORDER Appealed (The Legal Briefs #3):

51OWOu8tjPL._SX320_BO1,204,203,200_When Brent Mason looks at Kennedy Randolph, he doesn’t see the awkward, sweet girl who grew up next door. He sees a self-assured, stunning woman…who wants to crush the most intimate – and prized – parts of his anatomy beneath the heels of her Christian Louboutins.

Brent has never let the loss of his leg in a childhood accident affect his ability to lead a fulfilling life. He sets high goals–and then he reaches them.

And now he has his sights set on Kennedy.
**
When Kennedy looks at Brent Mason, all she sees is the selfish, Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue-worthy teenager who humiliated her in high school to join the popular crowd. A crowd that made those years a living hell.

She’s not a lovesick social outcast anymore – she’s a DC prosecutor with a long winning streak behind her. Brent is the opposing attorney in her next case and she thinks it’s time to put him through a little hell of his own.

But things aren’t exactly working out that way.

Because every fiery exchange has her wondering if he’s as passionate in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom. Each argument and objection only makes him want her more. In the end, Brent and Kennedy may just find themselves in love…or in contempt of court.

APPEALED is a sexy, humorous romance about first crushes, second chances and the final verdict of the heart.

That’s definitely not part of the plan.
