Jed Had to Die by Tara Sivec
November 1, 2016
Genre: Romantic Comedy
The happiest day of Payton Lambert’s life was the
day she graduated high school and watched Bald Knob, Kentucky get smaller and
smaller in her rearview mirror. She wanted more for her life than a tiny town
where everyone knows your business and you can’t find a decent cup of coffee
for at least forty miles. Twelve years later, an unexpected phone call in the
middle of the night has her packing up her life in Chicago and racing back home
to the one person she ever regretted leaving behind.
Upon her return, she sees that Leo Hudson, the scrawny boy who followed Payton
around like a puppy and could recite cow insemination facts in his sleep, is
long gone. Leo is still hot on her heels, but now he’s wearing a sheriff badge
and dead set on solving a murder that may or may not involve Payton…along
with half the town. In a place where the biggest crime happened the day someone
kicked a few of his cows, people are pointing fingers, rumors are spreading
like wildfire, and Payton swears she’s only making out with the sweet-talking, studly
sheriff to distract him from the secrets she’s keeping.
When you’ve been tased, peed on by a yippy dog named Bo Jangles, and can’t stop
picturing what Sheriff Hudson looks like naked, it will be a tough job making
everyone agree that…Jed had to die.
This book is why I love Tara Sivec! Jed Had to Die was the perfect mix of humor, romance and a bit of mystery too! I laughed and swooned and just really truly enjoyed this book and these fantastic characters that honestly, I would love to be friends with!
Payton escaped her small hometown, Bald Knob, Kentucky years ago and has created a successful life in Chicago. She owns an awesome coffee shop called Liquid Crack that specializes in just good coffee, no froufrou specialty drinks! She’s strong and independent, newly single – if only he’d believe her, until one night she receives a late night call that sends her rushing back to Bald Knob to help her childhood best friend Emma Jo.
Emma Jo has been horribly beaten by her husband and is in the hospital, with no else to call she calls Payton. Emma Jo is married to Jed and he’s the mayor of Bald Knob, everyone seems to love him and no one but Emma Jo knows the truth. Well, Payton swoops in and to make sure Emma Jo is protected from Jed and after changing the locks the two women make friends with a lot of wine! I mean a lot! Well, the next morning Jed is found dead in the backyard and now it’s all about finding out what exactly happened to Jed.
What happens next is a combination of baking mishaps, more wine drinking, nosy neighbors and one drop dead sexy Sherriff, Leo Hudson. The story alternates between Payton’s POV and official ‘testimony’ from the townspeople, and the main characters. I don’t want to spoil any of the fun so you’ll just have to read that!
I think Tara has done a fantastic job of mixing the funny with the serious. There is a murder investigation, a woman healing from years of abuse and also a very sweet, heartwarming romance too. I loved how zany this book was, the crazy neighbors, the sassy friends and the schmoop too, but it makes for a very enjoyable read to laugh with and get lost in!
