4 – 4.5 Stars

This is why I love reading R.J. Scott books – so much feeling and emotion! Back Home grabbed me by the heart right from the beginning and never let go, oh I adored both Jordan and Kieran and their journey together. I felt like this story started with the angsty parts and worked through it as the story went on, and I loved that about this book!

Jordan has known the Addison family since he was a kid when he became friends with their oldest son Brad. The two were best friends and eventually became a couple, building a life together. There’s also Brad’s younger brother Kieran, who’s always had a crush on Jordan, and to escape those feelings he moves to London after finishing high school. But tragedy strikes, taking Brad from them and leaving both Jordan and Kieran carrying heavy guilt, for different reasons. A couple years later and Jordan is still running the construction company with Mr. Addison but as his health is failing Kieran returns home and finally real feelings have to be revealed.

There is a lot of pain in Kieran and Jordan, both men still carrying the hurt and guilt that came from losing Brad. Kieran knows he still loves Jordan, but he thinks Jordan hates him. Jordan feels the guilt of Brad’s death every day and tries to push away the feelings he’s carried for Jordan. As the two start working together to save their company, the real truths come out and just maybe they can start to heal.

This book was emotional to say the least, but it was a beautiful journey of healing and finding real love. Both Kieran and Jordan learn that they have to be open and honest with each other, and admit that things weren’t always what they had seemed to be. They both also have to move on from the past. Not only is their relationship special, but I adored the relationship between Jordan and the Addison parents, Phil and Anna were such loving characters and I loved how they played a role in Jordan and Kieran finding their happiness together.

I really enjoyed the flow of this book, the highs and lows for Kieran and Jordan and how they worked through it together. I have long been a fan of Ms. Scott’s books and Back Home is another great addition to her collection. Powerful story with beautifully damaged characters who really do deserve that happily ever after.
