Synopsis

PIERRE (“GAGS”)

My life is complicated.

Hell, I’m complicated.

I don’t know a life beyond how I’m perceived. After a devastating divorce, it looked like I never would.

Can a hockey fight change your life?

I may not understand my attraction to Sven Holmer, but I can tell you my obsession with kissing him started in the middle of a fight. When we met again, the conversation was easy, the banter effortless. Once stolen glances gave way to secret touches, I was more confused than ever. How the hell am I supposed to handle it when everything I’ve always believed about myself no longer fits?

Things are great… until they aren’t.

Our connection deepens with every minute we spend together, but like me, Sven is no stranger to betrayal and heartache. Between my stubbornness, his reservations, and the start of a new season, how can we survive months apart?

When tragedy strikes, all bets are off. I just hope it’s not too late.

Broken Ice, Mended Hearts features two thirty-something hockey players hardened by heartbreak. This compelling, angsty book includes a bisexual awakening, hurt/comfort, found family, first times, high heat, and a hard-earned HEA. Though it is part of the Bethesda Barracudas Hockey series, it can be read as a standalone.

Jenn Review

4 Stars

I enjoyed this book, especially how these two meet and the chemistry that is there right from the start, it definitely sets the tone for their story. I really liked Gags and Sven together, I was really rooting for these two and wanting to see them figure it out and find happiness, especially together since they both so deserved it.

Both Gags and Sven are hockey players, not for the same team but in the same area and despite that their first meeting was in a fight on the ice, the two becomes friends. Gags is recently divorced, turns out his wife was only with him for the money and cheated on him, and with his friends traveling he’s pretty much on his own. Sven too experienced a rough break up and has just moved to DC and doesn’t really know the area so it’s the perfect opportunity for Gags to step up and show him around. Again, these two form a solid friendship but there’s also no denying the attraction between them. Sven is gay and comfortable with his sexuality, Gags has always thought he was straight and pictured his life with a woman, so his attraction to Sven definitely confuses him.

I did like how things developed between them, it feels natural and genuine, even the difficult moments. Gags is trying to come to terms with how he feels and Sven is patient and caring with him. They seem to figure it out though and they are so sweet together but then their hockey season starts and the brutal travel schedule threatens to destroy everything they’ve built. I really felt for them, you can really feel them struggling but then there’s some more drama for them, that truly threatens everything. That type that makes the real feelings come out and make themselves known.

Again, I really liked these two together, you can genuinely feel the passion and love they have for each other. Sven has such a sweet heart and I felt like he was the perfect match for Gags. I really loved how their story comes together, it was so fitting for them and made my heart happy. It’s definitely an emotional journey with these two but completely worth all the feels!

PROLOGUE

Gags

The sharp grind of skates cutting through the ice blended with the thunderous roar of twenty thousand Barracuda fans, drowning out all but the adrenaline-fueled rush toward the goal. Todd Cleever, my D-partner, had the puck, and his breakaway had caught everyone off guard. Twenty feet from our goal, a Congressman had tried to send a pass to his teammate, but Cleevs intercepted the puck and streaked away toward the Congressmen’s zone.

Sven Holmer, one of the Congressmen’s defensemen, had been shadowing Cleevs, and he proved to be the only player able to keep up with him. I chased our center, Nick Johnson, down the ice, hoping to give him cover. After crossing the blue line, Cleevs banked left toward the goal, giving Holmer the angle he needed to block his way. Nick and I approached from the opposite side, and when Nick called for the puck, Cleevs turned to make the pass. Holmer, recognizing the threat, changed course and headed in our direction.

Nick caught the pass and unleashed a shot on goal. Before the crowd could react to the puck finding the net, Holmer crashed into Nick. As the horn sounded, my vision turned as red as the goal light. I pushed off with mayhem on my mind, and by the time our teammates caught up with Nick for the celly, I was already in Holmer’s face. “You dumb shit,” I yelled. “He’d already made his shot.”

“Fuck you! I was doing my job.”

“Your job’s gonna get somebody hurt.” I shoved him backward. “Maybe you.”

“Motherfucker!”

“Eat shit, dumbass!”

He dropped his gloves and lunged at me, but the momentum nearly toppled him, and he grabbed me to keep from falling. As we teetered, I flung off my gloves and wrapped my arms around him to steady us both. When I was sure we weren’t going to fall, I let go with my right hand and pulled my arm back. I landed a powerful punch, and the impact resonated with the sickening thud of flesh against flesh. Intent on retaliating, Holmer struggled to break free, but his strategy shifted after I punched him again. Clutching me with both arms, he refused to let go.

“Get off, you son of a bitch,” I yelled, unable to break his vise-like grip. When we were on the verge of toppling over, I had no other option but to wrap both arms around him again. Locked in an awkward, hateful hug, we balanced each other as our enraged curses colored the air. While the crowd bayed for blood, I desperately tried to break free.

When we inevitably crashed to the ice, I found myself on top of him, poised for the advantage. I clenched my fist, ready to deliver another blow. My focus shifted abruptly when his brilliant blue eyes captured my attention. They shimmered under the unforgiving arena lights, looking as deep as the ocean. The fight’s urgency waned, and I froze in place, staring down at him. While I struggled to decide the exact shade of blue in his eyes, the game receded into the background.

His scent enveloped me, an intoxicating blend of sweat and testosterone, and I leaned closer. As I lowered myself, he molded his body against mine, the sensation reminiscent of a lover’s embrace. I tore my gaze from his eyes, only to be entranced by his pouty, pink lips, stained with a telltale hint of blood from one of my punches.

He ran his tongue over them, sending a surge of desire rippling through me. Incredibly, I longed to kiss him and relish the lingering traces of our battle. As he angled his head back and moved his hips against me, my dick thickened inside my cup. Shit, please tell me I’m not getting hard in the middle of a game.

Drawn by an inexplicable force, I lowered my head, grappling with the reality that I was about to kiss a man on national TV. My heart raced as he smirked—a daring challenge or an invitation to continue?—and a wisp of his hot breath caressed my cheek. Holmer’s eyes widened when a ref began tugging on my jersey and calling our names. We clung to each other, not wanting the moment to end.

“Break it up, guys. On your feet.”

We didn’t budge, and the officials struggled to lift me off him. After they dragged us both upright, a ref passed sentence: “Five minutes each. Fighting.”

Our eyes met again, and Holmer quirked an eyebrow. Just before a linesman swiveled me toward the sin bin, Holmer worked his lips into a small smile.

My heart hammered the entire time I was in the box. What the actual fuck? That was the damnedest fight I’ve ever had. One thing’s for sure, I need to get laid tonight.

CHRISTMAS FOR KEEPS

by Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

Blog Tour

Release Date: November 1, 2023

Cover Design: Kate Farlow @ Y’all That Graphic

Genre: M/M Holiday Romance Novella Standalone
Trope: Second chance, forced proximity, small town, HEA

Synopsis

I was supposed to be on a winter vacation with my best friend in the delightfully snowy town of Stowe, Vermont.

I was supposed to be sipping hot chocolate, staying up late, and sharing secrets.

I was supposed to be making a fool of myself on the bunny slope and sneaking glances at hot guys.

I was not supposed to be sitting in the SUV I’d just rear-ended.

I was not supposed to lose my hotel reservations because said rear-ending made me miss check-in.

And I most definitely should not be sharing the cabin of the hottest man I’d ever touched.

Oh, did I mention the SUV and cabin belong To. My. Ex?

Can you call someone an ex if you never actually broke up?

God, he looks good. The last four years have definitely been kind to him. So, would it be so bad if we shared a kiss—only one—for old times’ sake?

But…What if we could make it work? What if how easy it has been to slip back into an “us” means there’s still hope?

What if this vacation isn’t just a getaway but a journey back home—for keeps this time?

While Christmas for Keeps is a follow-up to the novella, Swimming Against the Tide, both books are complete standalones. Of course, you can always enjoy them together for a spectacularly bingeworthy experience.

3.5 – 4 Stars
So I have to admit I was a little hesitant about this book when I realized it was Connor and Zach from Swimming Against the Tide and they had been apart for some years because I liked them and was happy with how their story came together. But, after my initial fear I think Josh and Ryan deliver a very heartwarming and sweet story that gives Connor and Zach the happiness and love that they deserve.
I did really enjoy this read and seeing them get their second chance together, and while it has a lot of sweetness these two also have to face the truths of how they fell apart the first time and are met with some new challenges. There is a lot of emotion packed into this book and I really did feel for the moments of struggle that they experience. I am so happy that they were able to find their happiness together and this book definitely left me with a smile!

Synopsis

Daniel

I got my Ph.D. and a fantastic teaching job by keeping my nose to the grindstone and avoiding relationships. Not that I didn’t like men—quite the opposite—but getting involved took time I didn’t have.

One summer evening, I went out for a drink and met the most beautiful guy I’d ever seen. After an unforgettable night, I couldn’t wait to meet up again, but I missed our date. Imagine my panic when I realized we’d forgotten to trade numbers.

Caleb

A summer job as a law firm intern kept me busy, but one night, I needed to blow off some steam. At the bar, a gorgeous man saved me from an overzealous admirer. My rescuer gave me the kiss of my life, and I wound up in his bed. After the night turned out to be even better than the kiss, we made a date to meet again. Unfortunately, he no-showed on me, leaving me disappointed and confused for months.

The following spring, when I showed up for a class taught by some hotshot new professor, a breathtaking man walked into the room. My heart stopped because my new professor was the guy who stood me up last summer. Was I glad to see him? I wasn’t sure. But one thing was certain—I was the very last person he wanted in his class.

I thought this was a fun read, it’s got a hot start that speaks to the chemistry between Daniel and Caleb but a series of miscommunications/misunderstandings leads this to be a bit of a second chance story.

These two meet one night in a bar and that leads to a hot hookup, it’s supposed to be more, but that’s where the miscommunication comes in and it doesn’t happen. They meet again when Caleb discovers that Daniel is the new professor in the class he needs in order to graduate. It’s a shock to them both and it leads to some tense moments but they have to figure out a way to work through that it leads to them reconnecting. As it turns out, both Caleb and Daniel haven’t forgotten about that night and what was supposed to be, and their connection and chemistry certainly hasn’t diminished. Now, they are figuring out how to navigate these feelings and the complications of a student/teacher relationship.

There is a bit of insta-love between these two, they seem to go from panic at seeing each other again to deep feelings but it does feel genuine. I really felt like these two truly did deeply care about each other and shared something very special right from the start. They certainly have some challenges though, and not just the whole student/teacher issue, but also Caleb’s best friend Luca and some feelings swirling there and the prospect of what the future looks like for them. Again, very real feelings with this book, the sweet, the loving and the challenging. I really enjoyed their story, it’s a great combination of sweet and hot and filled with a lot of those great little personal moments that really connect you to the characters and their journey. I also really enjoyed how these two support each other and are determined to make their future work, again, you can just feel their love for each other. Overall, a heartfelt and fun read!

Excerpt

Eager to see Marlowe’s new history whiz, I put on a big smile and sat up. A man walked to the lectern, and my eyes nearly popped out of my head. He was stunning, with a hard, muscular body, short brown hair, and sultry dark eyes. When he glanced around, shock hit me like a brick wall, and it was like all the air had been sucked out of the room. Fuck the hell out of me!

On second thought, there’s no need. He already did. Several times.

There was no doubt it was Daniel; I’d have recognized him anywhere. But realizing he was a faculty member at Marlowe was the surprise of the year. I’d known he was a teacher, but not what he taught. When I left his apartment that day in New York, he’d said he had a meeting at NYU, so I wondered if there was a connection there.

Shit, what am I going to do? I need this class, but I can’t stay here, looking at him every day and remembering what we did. Even if I could stand it, he may not let me. Isn’t there a rule about teaching someone you’ve hooked up with? This could be a disaster because if I don’t take this class, I won’t graduate in May.

While I struggled for air, he smiled, lighting up the entire room. Oh my God, he’s even better looking now than he was last summer.

“Good morning. I’m Dr. Quinn, and I’m glad to see so many of you out on a snowy day.”

The sound of his voice unleashed a flood of memories. It had been June. The day was a scorcher, and after work, I went to a bar near NYU. I’d been there a few times, and it was a good place to get a cold drink and talk to people. I’d never found a hookup there, and I wasn’t looking for one the night I met Daniel.

An older man had tried to convince me to go to dinner with him. He spooked me when he said he knew what young guys wanted, and when I tried to get away, he started following me around. I’d ducked into a corner and lost him when I saw an empty stool at the bar. The guy sitting next to it was hunched over like he was alone, a perfect five-minute boyfriend. I ran for the seat.

Daniel raised his voice, bringing me back to the present. “I’ll pass around the syllabus while I call the roll.” He handed a stack of papers to a girl in the front row and returned to the lectern. “Okay, let’s see who’s here.”

Oh, honey, you’re about to find out.

I braced myself as he began calling names. It wouldn’t be long.

Anderson, Aubuchon, Bennet, Carson…

I looked down and didn’t respond.

“Caleb Carson?” he repeated.

“Here,” I said, raising my head and meeting his eyes.

Daniel’s jaw dropped. His lips moved, and when no words came out, he cleared his throat.

“Thank you.”

SWIMMING AGAINST THE TIDE

by Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

Blog Tour

Release Date: May 11, 2023

Cover Design: Kate Farlow @ Y’all That Graphic

Genre: M/M College Romance Novella
Trope: Friends with benefits, secret relationship, HEA

Synopsis

Zach

I wanted what I thought was the ideal college experience—an excellent school and a great fraternity. Since I was a legacy, it was Zeta from the get-go. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy it. In fact, I had so much fun I didn’t pay enough attention to one very important thing—the culture. The very conservative, closed-minded culture. The culture that welcomed no one who wasn’t a carbon copy of everyone else. The culture where a gay man has only one option: live in the closet and survive on occasional anonymous hookups.

I made it work until I saw a gorgeous guy jump into the bushes one night after a party. I went after him, and my life was never the same.

Connor

After my best friend ditched me at a frat party, I had nothing to do but drink away the time and wait for my own Prince Frat Bro to rescue me. Yeah, right. I was pretty sure I was the only gay guy there, and I finally gave up and left. Then, the night took an interesting turn on my walk home.

I guess you can’t find love when you beat around the bushes.

Swimming Against the Tide is a romance between two very different young men: a closeted frat bro sophomore and an out-and-proud freshman. Neither can resist the connection made at the most awkward, incredibly sweet, and impossible-to-forget meet-cute ever. How can they get what they want without being swept away by the tide?

This gay college romance features themes of Greek life, a secret relationship, undeniable chemistry, and steamy moments full of delightfully dirty talk. There are also tough decisions, coming out, and an HEA that will pull at your heartstrings every time you read it.

Jenn Review

3.5 Stars

This was a fun, cute read about discovering your true self, finding love and also finding what you are willing to do for that love. I really liked Connor and Zach and was definitely rooting for them. They have a bit of an awkward first meeting, but despite that, it’s easy to feel their quick connection. The challenge they face, Connor is out and proud, living his life the way he wants and Zach, well he’s completely in the closet and a member of a fraternity known for being homophobic and not accepting of others.

It’s not an overly angsty journey for these guys, more of an awakening and awareness, it’s a very touching journey. I really loved seeing Zach grow, come to terms with who he is and wants to be and ultimately standing up for himself. They are super cute together and develop serious feelings pretty quickly. Overall, this was a feel-good, quick read that left me happy!

Synopsis

Eckie

There are ways to get ahead in college hockey, but having a meltdown, trying to get rid of your coach, and stalking his boyfriend isn’t one of them. Is it really a surprise that I wound up in a hospital facing my demons instead of getting ready to play for the pros and taking care of my baby? I needed the world’s biggest redo, but the probability of a second chance was about the same as…

Jack Rogan walking through the door. But there he was! Jack was one of my coaches, and I was pretty sure he was straight. His easy laugh and sympathetic ear put a smile on my face. He made me believe I could turn my life around. But as much as I liked him, I knew I had to put my fantasies aside. With obligations to meet and amends to make, I didn’t have time to obsess about a guy who was out of my reach.

So why did I say yes when he offered me a place to stay while I got on my feet?

Jack

I was done with relationships. A fractured heart had made sure my walls were high, and my shields were strong. There wasn’t a man I couldn’t resist—until Eckie.

After driving everyone away in an avalanche of self-destruction, he was getting much needed help, and I wondered if I should go see him. A single visit turned into the best part of every day, and I was hooked. When I was with Eckie, the world made sense again. There were only two years separating us, but since I was one of his coaches, spending time together was dangerous. If we kept it up, who knew what I might do?

Maybe something brilliant, like asking him to stay with me when he left the hospital. I knew it was risky, and I told myself I was only being a friend. But the truth was, I liked feeling things again.

Eckie was seeking redemption; Jack was trying to do the right thing. Neither planned on anything beyond friendship. Will following their hearts leave them worse than before, or will they find what they’ve needed all along?

Back to Center is a story of redemption and the unexpected love a man finds in a friend he never knew he’d have. It also includes exciting hockey, a coach/player dynamic, great communication, unquenchable longing giving way to irrepressible heat, an adorable baby, and a perfect HEA.

Content warnings for depression and physical/emotional abuse by parents. The abuse happened in the past, but knowing about it may be difficult for some.

“How do you feel about things now?” Eckie asked. “You’re a brilliant coach, but it’s probably not too late to get into the NHL. You’d be a free agent.”

“I don’t think I want that. Once I decided not to sign, everything in my life improved. I know how much you want to play, so you may not understand, but I want to teach players, enable them to do their best.” I hesitated before adding, “And I want plenty of time to love somebody if I’m lucky enough to get the chance.”

A smile touched his lips. “You’re too amazing not to have that in your future.”

My mouth went dry, but I had to ask. “Are you upset because I didn’t tell you about my depression sooner? I wasn’t trying to hide it from you, I swear. It’s just that you were working so hard on your own problems, and I didn’t want to interfere with that.” My voice fluttered, so I stopped long enough to swallow. “To be honest, I was also afraid if I told you, you might not believe I liked you. I didn’t want you to think there was some other reason I was visiting.”

“Like feeling sorry for me?”

“That was never it, not one time. I came to see you because I wanted to. When there was a day I couldn’t make it, I was uneasy until I saw you again. Do you believe me?”

“Yes. You’re telling me things now, and I understand why you didn’t before.”

I blew out a relieved breath. “Thank you.”

“On the days you couldn’t come to visit, I felt empty. I like you, too, which brings up something I’ve been meaning to ask.”

Someone yelled in the distance, but neither of us moved. Eckie’s eyes looked like shiny black onyxes as he shifted toward me. “Do you like girls, Jack?”

My heart thumped, but not in a bad way. He’d given me the opening I needed. “Yes, but not how I think you mean it. I’m gay.”

“Wow.”

I was glad to get it out there, but when he remained quiet, I prickled. Was it not what he wanted to hear? Whatever I expected from him, it wasn’t silence. “What the hell?” I snapped. “You ask me something like that, and when I answer, all you have to say is ‘wow’?”

“Whoa! Easy, Jack.”

“I’ve been wanting to tell you, looking for the right time. I don’t want you to think I’m ashamed of it or tried to hide it from you. Just like with my depression, I didn’t say anything because you had your hands full taking care of yourself, and I didn’t want you to think I was…”

He hiked an eyebrow.

“I didn’t want you thinking I was there to hit on you. My feelings about you are much deeper than that.”

Eckie still didn’t say anything, and I got irritated again. “I wanted to tell you, but the longer I waited, the harder it was. Now it’s out there, and I’m glad you asked me, but you don’t have anything to say? Why the hell did you bring it up?” I ran out of steam and waited for a response, wondering what he’d do if I kissed him.

His lips twitched, and he looked like he was waiting for me to start yelling again. When I didn’t, he leaned closer. “Are you done now?”

Embarrassed by my outburst, I nodded.

“Good, because I have things to say.”

I nodded again.

“First, I’ve been hoping you’re gay, because you’ll never know how much I’ve wanted to—”

All at once, his lips were on mine. Soft and warm, they tasted like cherry lip balm. We wrapped our arms around each other while we sneaked breaths and hummed softly. I hoped the moment would last forever, but he drew away too soon. “I’ve wanted to do that for a long time.”

Breathless, I whispered, “Glad you did it, then.”

He licked my lips and kissed me again. I opened for him, moaning while he explored, and birds sang nearby while we held each other. He smiled when we parted. “That’s only a little of what I have to say, but it couldn’t wait. Are you okay with this?”

My heart fluttered. “Perfect.”

He broadened his smile into a grin, looking as happy as I felt. “I’m glad we agree. Why don’t we go find someplace to eat? I’m starved, and we can talk more there.”
