EP Review
4 – 4.5 Stars
Wow – this book surprised me, in the best possible way! I hadn’t read the first book, which for me didn’t take anything away from Trystan and Dakota’s story, although I will be going back to read it! I think I expected something different when this story started, something lighter, but this story was powerful, emotional and really all about the power of love.
Trystan is a confident, popular football player destined for greatness and he knows it. He’s used to getting what he wants and when the cute, shy swimmer he’s lusting after proves to be a challenge, Trystan accepts that challenge and ends up in way deeper than he ever planned. Dakota turns out to be everything he ever wanted and he falls hard and fast. But, it’s not that easy, Dakota is trying to escape a horribly brutal past and it’s all about survival, not love.
I absolutely adored these two! I mean, I fell as hard and fast and Trystan. I loved the way Trystan broke through Dakota’s protective layers and without knowing the details of his pain, slowly started to heal him. Trystan is just such a loveable guy, even when he puts his foot in his mouth. Dakota, oh my god, my heart broke for him. The pain and suffering he’s experienced and the after effects that follow him around, oh you can just feel it. But slowly he lets Trystan in and starts finding joy in life again.
I really felt like this story was about the power of love and healing, of hope and believing in your worth. Trystan is that steadfast love for Dakota, he too discovering how powerful that real love can be. This book certainly had its dark moments that just gut you, but it also has plenty of smiles, cuteness, off the charts chemistry and so much heart. Again, I absolutely adored these two and their journey together! This is a book I won’ t soon forget and am definitely looking forward to reading more from T.S. McKinney!

But they never discuss what’s closest to their hearts, not prepared to risk their friendship for the mere possibility of something more.

Faced with bombs, assassins, and old ghosts, Joel and Kieran must find out why they’re targets, who is coming after them, and—most of all—how each would feel if he lost the other. Should they continue as best friends, or is it time to take a leap of faith?

3.5 Stars

This is one of those reviews that’s a little tricky, overall I did enjoy this story and the characters but there some challenges for me too. The story and the characters are strong and I found myself totally immersed in the action. I really liked Kieran and Joel, their strong personalities and yet tender feelings towards each other that both try to hide. They definitely both cared so much for the other and it takes some near death moments to finally be open about the truth.

I felt like a lot of this book, given that it’s book 1 in the series, was spent on set-up – getting to know the security company, the major players and the situation they’ve found themselves in. I definitely felt like I got to know the background very well and that the foundation for this series has been established.

Joel and Kieran are partners at Fireworks Security, they have a close bond and work well together. Both men have baggage though, and after a hostage situation gone wrong, they are trying to work through some of it when they end up in the middle of a whole other mess. Joel is injured, nearly killed in an explosion, it’s Kieran who rescues him and the drama really begins. Someone is after them and they have to figure out who it is and why before it’s too late.

There’s a lot of action and mystery in this story, the group trying to sort through the pieces of this puzzle and keep each other safe. Add in Joel’s doctor, Marius, a former military man and it really starts to get interesting. He is a great addition to this group and it definitely feels like he will be a part of this series in the future. Also in there is the relationship between Joel and Kieran. I loved the chemistry between these two from the beginning. It felt very natural and even when they were trying to hide their feelings you can tell that the feeling is there. Once it’s admitted I adored the way these two took care of each other.

Overall I liked this story, but there were times when I felt like there were holes, sometimes transitions felt abrupt and I’d get a little lost. The romance side sometimes felt like it was more minor than the suspense side, but I still enjoyed it. I am very curious to see what happens next for this group because the ending didn’t feel complete, not like a cliffhanger, but yeah I want more.

Blog Tour, Review & GIVEAWAY: Scarred by Mia Kerick

Today I’m thrilled to be a part of the blog tour for Scarred by Mia Kerick! This is a powerful, emotional story that took me for a ride! I loved Matt and Vedie and hope you’ll check out my review and the awesome GIVEAWAY too!

Happy Reading!

Scarred
Mia Kerick
Publication date: March 1st 2017
Genres: LGBTQ+, New Adult, Romance, Suspense

From bestselling author Mia Kerick comes a New Adult novel of Gay Romantic Suspense that will keep you up reading all night!

Matthew North waited ten years to heal from the devastating wounds inflicted by the man who abducted and abused him as a child. Living reclusively on a tropical island—with no company but his four cats—he merely avoids the lingering pain.

Wearing twisted ropes of mutilated skin on his back, Matt struggles with a profound hindrance—the scars that deaden his soul. However, on the night he meets lively Vedie Wilson, a local restaurant busboy who expresses his gender by wearing lipgloss and eyeliner along with his three-day beard, things change.

Gradually, Vedie and Mateo unite in friendship. Through a series of awkward encounters, the pair learns each other’s secrets. Vedie learns that an angelic face can front for a scarred soul. Matthew learns that the line between one’s masculine and feminine sides is blurred. Can they embrace the painful stories behind each other’s scars if they’re to find everlasting love? Or will surrendered love come to be yet another blemish on their souls?

jenn-review

4 Stars

Wow – this is an intense and emotional read, packed full of issues, drama and beautiful souls. Matt and Vedie are both broken and scarred for different reasons, but both are amazing individuals who’ve had to overcome so much in their lives. This book was an experience!

When I started this story I thought it was one I wasn’t going to like, it took some time to adjust to Vedie’s way of speaking and the way he thinks, but as I kept reading I found myself more and more attached to him and Matt as well. My heart for these two, for different reasons, but Ms. Kerick sucked me into the world that Vedie and Matt live in.

These two couldn’t be more different. Matt is cold and isolated and lives a life devoid of feeling, and this is his choice. Vedie is tired of apologizing for who he is and thinks he’s found a quiet place where he can be both masculine and feminine. He’s outgoing and social. Matt and Vedie should not connect but they do and it changes both of these men.

This story was powerful and painful, there were times when I had to put it down and take a few breaths. It was shocking and there were times it made my angry but above all it was hope and love. (sounds crazy, but that’s what Mia Kerick made me feel!) I loved the connecting Matt and Vedie found together, something that goes beyond the pain and fear and even deeper than just acceptance. These are two beautiful souls who deserve to find happiness.

Scarred made me laugh, made me cry, made me angry and made me love! This is a roller coaster of emotion with two imperfect men who find love when they least expect it, or think they can handle it. A great journey!

Author Bio:

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to Dreamspinner Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

Josh and Cal are back! I loved Good Morning My Angel and totally fell for Josh and Cal and I was definitely excited to dive back into their story. This book wasn’t exactly what I expected, but I did enjoy it! It was intense and action packed and I’m ready for more.

When this story begins Josh and Cal are living far apart, Josh in London and Cal in Seattle, unable to work together and be together. Cal knows he has some decisions to make but a near death experience for Josh sends him back to London, decision made. It’s not just an accident or a one time thing, the lives of those connected to them and the agency are now at stake!

This story hooked me from the start and I couldn’t put it down! I loved the pace and the action and of course Josh and Cal. I love the way these two are together, their connection and love, and of course the pet names! But, I don’t want to give anything away about the story, so I’ll just say I need more! I didn’t know this was going to be a longer series but I can freely admit that I’m excited about it! There is something so special about these characters and their story and they’ve just stayed with me. So MORE please!

Oh man! I have loved Blue and Brady and their journey together so very much and have to admit I was a little nervous about this book. And yeah, emotionally this one put me through the wringer and pretty much kept me there until the end! I would definitely recommend that these books be read in order, they are not standalones.

Brady and Blue have been through and dealt with so much together over the years, but they still have their issues, and when a young hot shot musician shows up it just makes all those issues come to the surface. Blue’s career is taking off and this is a big chance for him but his client is a big flirt and wants Blue. This is a whole new challenge for Blue. At the same time Brady is struggling as well, and this just sends his jealousy through the roof.

I understood what happened with Brady and Blue and their issues, but I have to admit this story was a little hard for me. I’ve become so attached to these two and this part of their journey made my heart hurt! It’s not to say this wasn’t a good read, it was, just much more angsty and heartbreaking. I was frustrated with many of the choices these two made and spent a good amount of this story wanting to throw something! I had to know what was going to happen though, I couldn’t put it down. For as much as I felt as broken as Blue and Brady during most of this story, I loved the end and the way it all came together even if it did happen quickly.

This story had real struggles and raw emotions and while it may not have been my favorite part of Brady and Blue’s relationship, I understood it’s a part of their journey. I don’t know if this is the end of this series, I sure hope that it’s not, but I ended this book with a smile and sigh of relief. Stealing Blue was a powerful and emotional story for Blue and Brady!

Brady Halverson sat in a dark leather chair in the living room with a glass of wine, listening to the chatter that had continued all through dinner. Blue was right. C.K. could keep a conversation going without any help.
Their dinner guest was a stereotypical teenager, energetic, excitable, and overconfident in places. He assumed they were seeing C.K.’s polite side. A kid raised with the kind of money and power that accompanied Freeman’s reputation had to be used to getting his way, and no doubt used to people kissing his ass. Brady wondered how many of Blue’s friends would join the queue before the album was finished.
Brady had noticed something else during the last couple of hours. C.K. was a flirt and his obvious target that night was Blue.
C.K. sat on the couch, closer to Blue than he needed to be, laughing at everything Blue said. He’d been playing that game all night. Using amusement as an excuse to touch Blue. Shoulder bumps. Playful shoves. Affectionate pats in random places.
Brady watched C.K. chuckle at a comment, giving Blue a gentle shove complete with a shy look from under his lashes. That was sixteen in the past hour. Had Blue and C.K. been alone the kid would have made a move already. That knowledge lit a cinder in Brady’s chest. He cooled it with a drink of wine.
Brady wasn’t fond of flirts. He was less fond of the kind who hit on his man. The only thing keeping him from pulling C.K. off the couch and shoving him into the vacant chair on the other side of the coffee table was his reluctance to look like the jealous, over protective type he was. So he sat and smiled and pretended not to see C.K.’s fingers rested on Blue’s shoulder.
Seventeen.
Blue didn’t seem to care, and Brady was struggling not to see it as proof Blue liked the attention. He couldn’t afford to start being paranoid that early. Blue and C.K. would spend the next several days locked in the upstairs studio, working alone together. Unless Brady cleared his schedule to sit up there with them, he would have to trust Blue to ignore C.K.’s advances. That or lose his mind and make a scene he wasn’t sure Blue would forgive.
That album was a big deal. It would either launch Blue’s new career as a producer or kill it. He didn’t want to be the reason the project failed.
Brady sat and pretended not to notice the kid encroaching on his territory, all but climbing in Blue’s lap.
Eighteen.
Nineteen.
Twenty.

Blurb

Dr. Paul Johnston can’t get a set of dark, somber eyes out of his head, and the timing couldn’t be worse.

The last thing he needs is to fall for a patient. Not now, when he’s been put on paid leave pending review of a formal complaint. One that most likely accuses him of sexual harrassment or impropriety of some kind. It’s possible he let his newfound freedom as a divorced, out-of-the-closet gay man go to his head, but he’s certain — mostly — he didn’t do anything wrong. Now, he’s struggling to handle the reality that his job is in danger and the only guy he wants should be off-limits.

Zane Kavanaugh is floundering, and there’s only one man who soothes the storm inside him.

Reeling from an assault that landed him in the hospital and the painful estrangement from his family since coming out, Zane is trying to get his feet under him and find his independence. He moves in with a roommate and searches for a job, all while recovering from a fractured arm and cracked ribs. None of that hurts as much as the emotional damage he’s suffered. When he connects with Dr. Paul Johnston outside of the ER, he’s drawn to the man’s calm, collected manner. It doesn’t hurt that Paul’s lack of experience with men is sexy as hell, and so are his over-the-top responses when Zane gets his lips on him.

There’s no right time to fall in love.

Paul is afraid to start a relationship, and Zane can only handle so much more rejection. Will these two find their perfect moment, or will they realize you can’t choose when and how you fall in love? If Paul can’t take a risk, he may have to choose: the career he loves or the first man to capture his heart.

Bedside Manner is Book 1 of the Hearts & Health series. This is a spin-off series from the book Heart Trouble and includes characters from that novel, but it can be read as a standalone.

I enjoyed this sweet read from DJ Jamison! Paul and Zane are great characters, a bit broken and in need of love but definitely likeable guys! I was glad that I had recently read Heart Trouble because we get a lot of Ben and Gage too and knowing their story helped me feel connected to Paul and Zane’s journey together.

Paul is a recently divorced and newly out doctor who lives for his job – he’s a great ER doctor even if he flirts a little bit. Zane is a college student who is recovering from a brutal beating from his step-father. These two shouldn’t connect but they do and neither man can seem to deny it no matter what is on the line.

I liked Paul and Zane, and I liked them together. Their age difference never bothered me and I think it’s because DJ Jamison does a great job of connecting these two. Both of these men have been hurt and have never really had a healthy, loving relationship with a partner before so they pretty much have to learn together. I loved Zane’s attitude and willingness to fight for Paul and what they shared. Paul’s a bit slower, but he with his career in jeopardy he has to be. Their relationship felt very real, with the sweet tender moments, the chemistry together and the struggles.

I really did enjoy this story from start to finish and found myself pretty attached to these two. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series – I’m hooked!

* * * Since the topic of college hazing could be a trigger for some, please consider this a warning as this may not be a book you’d be comfortable reading. * * *

Fizzbo is used to taking care of people. He’s the one in charge of the personal and professional security needs for both world-famous rock bands, Ivory Tower and Black Ice. Having their backs is what he does best, and he takes pride in that, both on and off the job. When he’s called into action to save the man he loves, all of his skills are put to the test. Suddenly, he isn’t so sure his training will be enough, but saving Kensey is personal, and he’s willing do anything to keep him safe.

Kensey Pride is the man who rocked Fizzbo’s world when they met during the European tour with Ivory Tower and Black Ice. Kensey’s passion for his job, making people look and feel beautiful in their own skin, is something he lacks in his own life until the magnetism of a certain security guard comes along and breaks down the walls he’s built around his heart to keep him safe. For the first time in his life, Kensey discovers he likes who he sees looking back at him in the mirror.

Without the safety of those walls and his heart left unprotected, Kensey becomes an easy target for those who can’t let go of the past. Will Fizzbo’s strength and love be enough to bring Kensey home, or will old truths be too much for the guard to handle?

FIZZBO MUSCLE TEASER COMPRESSED

Excerpt

“Come on, old man. I’ll show you how it’s done,” Kensey said.

Fizzbo froze in place, his feet sinking into the soft sand. “Whoa, who the fuck are you calling an old man?”

Kensey arched one thin brow. “Did I hit a nerve with that comment?”

“Does my age really bother you?” Fizzbo asked with his hands on his hips.

Kensey stepped back to Fizzbo and held his steady gaze. “Nope. It doesn’t bother me in the least,” he answered with conviction. “I kind of like that you’re an . . . older, more mature man.”

“Jesus, how fucking old do you think I am?”

“I don’t know, maybe . . . forty?” Kensey dropped his gaze to the sand to try and hide his smile.

“What the actual fuck?” Fizzbo nearly roared the words. “Forty? Are you fucking joking right now? Do I really look forty to you?” He spit the words out like he were describing some kind of terminal disease.

Kensey finally lost control of the laugh he was holding back and let it fly. “I’m busting your balls!” he exclaimed, then he bent over holding onto his thighs as his shoulders continued to quake from the humor he saw in the situation.

“Hey, I’m being serious here,” Fizzbo admonished. “How old do you really think I am? Tell me. I want to know.”

Kensey did his best to pull himself together and stood upright to face him. His eyes canvassed Fizzbo’s face and body, slowly skimming over every ridge of muscle, the thick column of his throat, and that chiseled jawline that Kensey imagined dragging his tongue across and feeling the scrap of whiskers against it. He could feel his cock beginning to take notice of the situation, hardening faster than he could stop it from happening.

“Thirty-five,” Kensey finally guessed after pretending to carefully calculate his answer.

Fizzbo seemed to deflate a bit after that and finally a grin appeared on his face. “I’m thirty-six,” he offered. “Is that too old for you?”

Kensey shook his head. “Nope, I think you’re okay. I’m twenty-six and you fall just under the geezer threshold, so we’re good. I can do this and not have to worry about being arrested for elder abuse.”

Fizzbo lunged for Kensey and threw him over his shoulders in a fireman’s carry before Kensey had a chance to protest. “You fucking smart ass,” he scolded. “You’ll pay for that last remark.”

“Hmmm, is that a promise?”

“Don’t tempt me, you little whipper-snapper,” Fizzbo chuckled as he began to haul Kensey back towards his house. “I’m happy to put you over my knee and punish you for that smart mouth of yours.”

Kensey bounced on Fizzbo’s broad shoulders with each step he took in the sand. “Okay, now you’re just being a cruel tease!”

“A tease is someone who doesn’t follow through,” Fizzbo said. “Something else you should know about me, Kens, I always follow through–with promises and threats.”

Kensey slumped against Fizzbo’s broad shoulders and sighed loudly. “Fuckkkk.”

“You’ve met your match with me,” Fizzbo laughed. “The sooner you embrace that truth, the better off you’ll be at handling me.”

Patience is a virtue. But what if you wait too long?

While Xander Ekman’s dream of becoming a successful artist has come true, his love life has gone from bad to worse. Sick of the endless string of one-night stands, he accepts the challenge when his best friend, Erik, bets him that he can’t be celibate for a month. Now all he needs is a reminder to keep his distance in the heat of the moment.

Troy Moriarty doesn’t have time for love. He’s too busy trying to keep his recently opened tattoo parlor afloat. Besides, ever since the man who was supposed to be his business partner abandoned him to run the shop on his own, he has a hard time trusting others.

When Xander turns to Troy for a tattoo that will remind him to be patient, the attraction is instant. But faced with Xander’s month of celibacy, Troy’s trust issues, and a nemesis lurking in the background, their relationship may be doomed before it has a chance to begin.

4 Stars

Patience is a story I really enjoyed and found myself totally invested in – it’s a slow burn story of two men who have both been burned in the past trying to figure out if they can find real love. I really enjoyed Xander and Troy’s story and am already looking forward to more in this series.

Xander is a successful artist, living his dream professionally, personally not so much. He lives in an endless string of one night stands and when his best friend Eric calls him on it the two men make a bet – Xander has to be celibate for a month. Troy is struggling to make his business a success after his business partner leaves him high and dry after Troy set up the business. He doesn’t trust easily anymore and doesn’t want to get hurt again. When Xander walks into his tattoo shop to get a special tattoo the two seem to click right away. But, both men are hiding secrets that threaten to destroy anything they may be building together.

I really liked these characters, I felt like I really got to know them and understand what they were feeling. There is a slow, hesitant burn between them that can definitely be felt. There’s a lot of push and pull, Xander has the bet though and Troy resistant for his own reasons. Their attraction is undeniable though. I loved that they got to know each other though, it wasn’t insta-sex that takes over the story. It really is about the build up between them.

This is the kind of story where you really get to know the characters and their journey and I really enjoyed it! Xander and Troy are so easy to love as are their best friends Lorcan and Eric. This was a fun, romantic story that gets right to the heart. I really enjoyed it and definitely look forward to more in this series, and yeah, I’m really hoping for a Lorcan and Eric story, I felt just as invested in them by the end as I was in Xander and Troy. Definitely a great start to a new series.

PROFILE PICTURE RAINBOW

Helena Stone can’t remember a life before words and reading. After growing up in a household where no holiday or festivity was complete without at least one new book, it’s hardly surprising she now owns more books than shelf space while her Kindle is about to explode.

The urge to write came as a surprise. The realisation that people might enjoy her words was a shock to say the least. Now that the writing bug has well and truly taken hold, Helena can no longer imagine not sharing the characters in her head and heart with the rest of the world.

Having left the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam for the peace and quiet of the Irish Country side she divides her time between reading, writing, long and often wet walks with the dog, her part-time job in a library, a grown-up daughter and her ever loving and patient husband.
