Disgraced FBI agent Nick Truman has failed to save his sister, held hostage by a drug cartel until he could give them Alex Crow, who eluded him. His epic downfall lands him in Witness Protection, where he plays by the rules and keeps to himself. But the murder of his neighbor brings danger to his door. He unexpectedly finds himself the champion of innocents and helplessly attracted to the homicide detective in charge of the case.

This can’t end well.

Homicide Detective Hank Axelrod is good at digging out secrets, maybe because he hides a big one of his own. He also suspects his husband has one foot out of the door of their marriage and the specter of single life looms unpleasantly on the horizon.

A murder resembling another brings Nick into his world, a man who claims to be a mystery writer looking for a real life resource. Hank’s instincts say he’s more than that, and he’s rarely wrong.

Torn between the errant soon-to-be-ex husband and the distracting, sexy stranger, Hank needs to focus all his attention on his murder case before he becomes the next victim.

Ben Emerson has lived by his minister father’s rules most of his life. Born into an ultra-conservative church community, he’s finally brave enough to break free and move to San Francisco. Distancing himself certainly helps create a new mindset, but living as an openly gay man takes some getting used to. When he reaches out to Xavier, a childhood friend who lives in the city, Ben isn’t sure how he’ll respond given their thorny history. Ben hopes the familiar connection will help him right some wrongs as well as provide the solace he’s been craving.

Xavier Ramos is who he is, and he doesn’t give a damn what anyone thinks. Whether it’s eyeliner, nail polish, tattoos or his love of hooking up, he uses his body as a form of self-expression but doesn’t let anyone get too close. When Ben reenters his life, Xavier helps him experience the city and feel comfortable in his own skin. Seeing the world through Ben’s eyes, he begins to wonder if he’s also not living as freely as he thought.

When Xavier challenges Ben’s beliefs about sex, it becomes explosive—for both of them. Xavier breaks apart Ben’s sheltered world and shows him what it’s like to live out loud. The more time they spend together, the more Xavier begins to long for Ben in a different way—one that both surprises and scares him. But real life doesn’t fade into the background, so when Ben’s past comes knocking, old habits are hard to break. Testing the foundation of their deepening connection will take a trust that will either bind them…or tear them apart.

**Riley Hart writing as Nyrae Dawn

**Ben is from PAINT THE STARS and Xavier is from A HUNDRED THOUSAND WORDS, but LIVING OUT LOUD can be read as a complete standalone.

I’m a huge fan of second chance romances and Living Out Loud is the perfect example of why! This is a story of two childhood friends who lost touch as teenagers and after many years have the chance to reconnect. I loved Ben and Xavier, they are both such sweet, wonderful guys who definitely deserve happiness.

Ben comes from a very religious family, his father is a minister in a very conservative small town church. They have a strict set of beliefs that they force on Ben, making him think he is wrong and sinful to be attracted to men. Xavier’s dad and step mother don’t really care what he does, they throw money at him but not love. Ben and Xavier are friends as kids, that kind of friendship where you really know that other person, like know one else does. But one day when Xavier acts on his attraction to his friend and kisses him Ben rejects him and in that moment everything changes.

Years later, Ben has moved to San Francisco to finally try to live the live he wants, out and proud. He knows Xavier lives in the city and reaches out to him, hoping to re-connect with his friend. Xavier is shocked to hear from Ben for sure, his rejection still stings but the two start talking and their friendship comes back naturally. Ben is naive and inexperienced, still trying to let go of the awful things his father and his church did to him, and when he finds out that Xavier is all about the pleasures of life, he asks for his help. The two start out with the intention of keeping it all physical but both men quickly find themselves feeling more than they ever expected.

I loved these two together, even with their issues Ben and Xavier seem to bring out the best in each other! Xavier gives Ben the confidence to be who he really is and express himself, while Ben softens Xavier and brings love into his life. These guys definitely have smoking hot chemistry, but they have a gentleness and sweetness together too. I loved seeing these two heal and grow together, embracing all the good together. I really enjoyed their journey, Christina Lee and Nyrae Dawn have delivered a wonderful, touching story with so many FEELS! Great characters that I fell in love with and story of healing and love and acceptance that definitely is a must-read!

EXCERPT

“Get your ass down here.” He frowns and I pat the floor beside me. “I’m serious, B. Get your ass down here. You can take it off when I’m done if you don’t like it. How do you know if something’s your style if you’ve never done it?”

I blow on my fingernails trying to get them to dry. Ben doesn’t move right away, but then he slides down to the floor beside me.

My pulse kicks up a notch. I don’t know why I want this so much for him.

He puts his hand on the table and I paint the first nail.

“I feel stupid,” he tells me.

“Do you think I look stupid with it?”

“Hell no. You look hot but—”

“But nothing. Be quiet and let me work.”

He chuckles. “You’re bossy.”

“You ain’t seen nothing yet,” I reply before getting back to work on his nails. His fingers are long, thicker than mine. His hands are beat up from his work, rough and abused with little scratches on them. “I can’t wait till you can touch me. I love rough hands.”

“Oh shit,” he says with a thickness to his voice that tells me he’s getting turned on again.

I finish the first hand before saying, “Now, the other.” He sets that hand on the table, but I grab it, suck one of his fingers into my mouth, even though I hadn’t planned to touch him again tonight.

“Fuck, Xavier,” he says and his eyes roll back in a way that really gets me hard.

“Good?”

“Yes.”

“You’re trembling,” I tell him as his hand gently shakes.

“That’s because I’m really turned on right now.”

Will Jason’s third time as a best man lead to first-time love for Vanya?

After fleeing violence in Moscow, student teacher Vanya Petrov winds up lonely in a run-down London hostel. At least visiting the Bond Street store where his roommate works lets him practice his English, but as Vanya’s vocabulary expands, so does his isolation, especially when he sees happy couples planning their perfect weddings.

According to Jason Balfour, weddings are a waste of time and money. After all, he’s been best man for his brother twice already. Saying that a third marriage will end in divorce too leads to an angry ultimatum: to save his relationship with his brother, Jason must meet his fiancée, at last, and make a good first impression.

Jason’s need to dress to impress brings him and Vanya together. Language is no barrier to falling in love with the young and fragile Russian, and neither is their age difference. But Vanya’s bruised soul carries secrets that could rip them apart. As the wedding draws near, Vanya must confess, and soon, or risk losing Jason—his own best man in Britain.

Con Riley really delivers a beautiful love story with Be My Best Man. I really enjoyed this story and found myself absolutely fascinated with Vanya and everything he was going through. He is a young Russian man seeking asylum and trying to survive in London. He doesn’t speak English very well, but is trying to learn and that’s how he meets Jason, a successful Londoner who needs some fashion help. Vanya ends up acting as a personal shopper for him, and the two click, never expecting to find so much more than a nice shirt and tie.

There is a lot to this story, not just Vanya and Jason’s relationship, it is deep and complex and gorgeously told. Vanya struggles with life in London while awaiting a decision regarding his asylum. He cannot legally work but desperately needs to get out of the hostel he is staying at. He’s trying to learn English and understand the new culture as well as come to terms with what happened to him in Russia. Meeting Jason brings happiness to his life for the first time in a long time, but he’s keeping secrets from him and as the two grow closer and there are real feelings involved Vanya knows his secrets could destroy everything.

There is so much emotion in this book, both from Jason and Vanya! I really loved these two beautiful men. Jason has plenty of insecurities when it comes to relationships, his own and that of his best friend and foster brother Andrew, but his intentions are never bad. Vanya’s heart just made mine melt, I just always thought of him as so very precious. Con Riley does a fantastic job of setting these two up to fall completely head over heels for each other and then drop the bomb on them. I knew it was coming but it still broke my heart! She put me back together though, in a raw and real way as Vanya finally reveals the truths of what happened to Jason. I loved the way this story all came together, it’s not always easy but it’s definitely worth it! Con Riley really delivers a touching and poignant story and I know these characters will stay in my heart!

Blog Tour & GIVEAWAY: Survivor by TM Smith

We are excited to be a part of the blog tour for Survivor by TM Smith! This is a wonderful story about healing and love! We’ve got some great teasers and a playlist to share along with my review and an amazing giveaway you definitely want to get in on!
Happy Reading!

Title: Survivor
Author: T.M. Smith
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: August 22, 2017

Taylor Langford’s world is torn apart when he is only thirteen years old—his parents killed, leaving him alone and orphaned. With no living relatives, he’d certainly be another statistic if not for the intervention of the policeman who found Taylor in the crawl space where his mother hid him that fateful night. Despite the tragedy and resulting anguish in his life, Taylor knows how lucky he is.

Frank Moore is a rookie with the Dallas Police Department when he and his partner answer a call in Devonshire, one of the city’s more affluent neighborhoods. They think the young boy in various pictures throughout the home has been kidnapped until they find him, shaken but alive. Officer Moore recognizes the pain in the kid’s eyes, having lost his own mother to cancer when he was just a boy. He steps in, making sure Taylor is placed with a loving foster family. Over the years, Frank becomes a permanent fixture in Taylor’s life.

A decade later, the case remains unsolved and the once gangly, uncertain teenager is now a college graduate who knows exactly what he wants. He’s coming home to the man that helped mold and shape his life, the man he’s loved for as long as he can remember, Frank Moore. But Taylor isn’t the only person returning to Dallas, and while Frank is distracted by his own conflicting feelings and the new bond growing between the two, the past creeps up on them, determined to finish what was started ten years earlier.

A note from the author…

I hope you enjoy Frank and Taylor’s story. It’s been a long road to get them settled, but I’m happy with where this story has taken them. When I started this book, the intent was to write a stand-alone story, but that has changed. Characters continually evolve throughout the writing process, and there are several characters in the book that want to tell their story. I’ve grown especially fond of Rory and I can’t wait to write his book, which will take us back to when he first joined the Bureau, and continue on to his happy ever after.

Please be advised: This is a May/December romance, and as in life, there are sexual situations that take place prior to the main characters finding their way to one another. This is not gratuitous; it is meant to show character growth and self-realization. There is absolutely no cheating.

I feel like I have to start by talking about this cover, I am absolutely in love with it! There is something so very beautiful about it, but something that evoked a lot of feeling for me before I even started the story! And oh what a story, I think TM Smith did a great job with this book, it is filled with emotion and love, and while there is pain the love is what wins.
The prologue absolutely got my attention and sent a chill down my spine. I knew immediately I was going to be hooked on this story. Taylor is only 13 when his parents are brutally murdered while he was hidden away in the attic. The police officer who finds him, Frank, waits patiently for Taylor to feel safe enough to come out of his hiding spot. The two form a bond then and it grows as Taylor grows up with Frank always a part of his life. This story alternates between Frank and Taylor’s POVs and starts when Taylor is still a teen. I really liked the early chapters as Taylor grew up, I really felt like I got to know him. As Taylor graduates from college he knows it’s time to confess his true feelings for Frank, and at the same time Frank is thinking the same thing and both men scarred that it could ruin the friendship they already have.
I absolutely adored Frank and Taylor together, once they finally confess their feelings it’s just so natural and loving between them. They have a shared past, one that includes a lot of pain but deep down they know each other so well and have loved each other for so long that their relationship is natural. It may seem like insta-love but I liked it – these two are just meant to be. Just as things settle between Frank and Taylor though the past comes back to get them and the truth comes out about what really happened the night Taylor’s parents were murdered.
There really was so much to love about this story, the bit of mystery surrounding the murders, the deep love between Taylor and Frank and also the wonderful supporting characters. TM Smith does a fantastic job of mixing in humor and sweetness into these characters. Frank’s partner Caleb and his wife are just pure awesomeness and Taylor’s adoptive parents are great, so loving and supportive. I felt like this was an honest story, Taylor struggles with what happened but he has a wonderful support system around him and he has Frank. Overall this was a great read that I could not put down! I love Taylor and Frank and their beautiful, healing love. I’m definitely excited to see what TM Smith is going to do with Rory!!

This is a fun, action packed story from start to finish! This is one of those books that keeps you guessing, you’re not always sure who you like and who you don’t! We meet Hunter and Shawn (we later learn he is Alex) working in a hospital, stealing glances at each other. Hunter has had a crush on Shawn for a while and when get up the nerve to finally ask him out it doesn’t go as he had hoped. The two are thrown together though when a drive by shooting has them hostages in the ER. Passion, secrets and lies follow though and these two have to try to find the truth if they stand a chance to be together for real.

There is a lot of action in this story and I really enjoyed the pace of this book. Hunter is a great character, I really felt for him and everything he was going through. He is still suffering from the trauma his ex put him through and the situations he finds himself in with Alex are a real test for him. Alex/Shawn, oh I felt for him too, trying to figure out which end is up with that guy. He’s been through so much and doesn’t know who to trust and yet he always finds Hunter. I really liked these two together and was definitely rooting for them, they really deserved to find that happy place. I liked the mystery of this story too, figuring out who the real bad guys are. This one really kept me on my toes from start to finish!

When Hunter and Alex (formally Shawn) are given the vacation of a lifetime, it’s a chance for them to pay attention to romance and get out of the path of danger. The tiny Caribbean island of Saba is gorgeous, the first to have marriage equality, and the Sabans are the nicest people on earth.

There’s lots of rum poolside for relaxing and a room with a mirror on the ceiling for passion. Hot karaoke nights, cold beer, and new friends.

Their new friends Orfeo and Max, and Max’s sister Talisha, share a troubling secret. Alex and Hunter want to help. As a hurricane bears down on them, a dead body surfaces, and a purple backpack loaded with stolen jewels leads a gang of dangerous men to the island.

Alex would rather poke his own eyes out with a pointy stick than call on his old enemy Nick Truman for help; he’d also do anything to keep Hunter out of danger. But even his old nemesis can’t reach them now.

Once again, they only have each other to depend on as their paradise is about to become hell on earth.

3.5 Stars

This book brings us back to Hunter and Alex as they try to put their lives back together after everything they have bee through. I would definitely recommend that you read Hitting Black Ice first and know how these two started out. I enjoyed this book, glad to see Hunter and Alex together and making it work. This book also packs a lot of action and story just like the first book.

Hunter is recovering and knows he needs to find a job again soon and Alex is working as a bartender while he waits to hear about his FBI application. Not the dream situation for either man but they are making it work as best they can. A visit from Alex’s moms sends these two on a three week vacation to a small island in the Caribbean.  It all starts out great, sun and water and a lot of hot and sexy moments for these two, but it’s not as peaceful as it should be. Orfeo, an island resident and someone Alex knew from his visit to the island as a kid, is a zen, yoga doing artist and a great friend but there are secrets he’s keeping with Max and his younger sister Talisha. Hunter and Alex know that there is more going on with that group but no one’s being honest. It’s not until a hurricane hits the island and lives are at stake that the truth comes out. Alex and Hunter again find themselves trying to survive.

There is a lot to this story, the first part focusing on Hunter and Alex recovering and rebuilding and then they get their vacation. Both men are still trying to come to terms with what happened with Nick and as they try to heal, they learn more about the situation that makes it even harder for them. I thought it was really interesting the way it is all connected. I really liked Orfeo and Max, especially once you learn the truth about them. I also liked that while there is action and suspense and you are left wondering if this whole crew is going to make it out alive, there isn’t unnecessary angst for Hunter and Alex. I really love these two together! Overall this was another fun, action filled read and I absolutely adored the ending!

Moving into a new home starts with a bang when Ryan Blackwell celebrates turning thirty. Being hungover means he’s bleary-eyed and clumsy the next day, but even in that state, he can appreciate how sexy and fit his neighbour is.

Matt Thomas isn’t looking for anything long-term—one and done is usually his life rule. Why settle down early, like his sister, when casual relationships are so easy? With Ryan living in the same building, chance encounters are inevitable. When one night together becomes two, a friends-with-benefits deal seems a natural progression.

There’s only one problem: sex with no strings relies on matching expectations, so Ryan can’t help worrying. His huge heart always wants more, but Matt’s been clear about his limits. As passion leads to caring, they’ll have to make some tough decisions—maybe this time, breaking some rules will be worth it if that means they’ll get to share a future.

jenn-review

4 Stars

This is a wonderfully fun story of Matt and Ryan, two adorably clueless men who completely fall for each other while insisting they are ‘just friends.’ I really liked these two, they were sweet and charming and their story had a nice, laid-back feel to it. Maybe this time is the kind of story that puts a smile on your face right from the start and it pretty much stays there to the end.

Matt and Ryan are to pretty regular guys who meet when as Ryan is moving into the same building where Matt lives. They don’t get off to the best start, but soon find a connection and strike up a friendship. Matt doesn’t do relationships, one and done is how he operates but after a hook-up with Ryan he seems okay wit the idea of friendship and maybe some extra benefits too. Ryan likes Matt and is trying not to get attached, he doesn’t do the whole friends with benefits thing all that well but he’s determined to make it work to keep his friendship with Matt. The two men start spending more and more time together and realize they enjoy their time together and actually are looking forward to it.

Again, these two are just adorably clueless and it makes for a fun read. It’s sweet to see Matt come to the realization that he’s not only allowed space for Ryan to be his friend, he actually wants more with him. Ryan too spends so much time convincing himself he’s good with the way things are that when it comes time to come clean about feelings it surprises him. I really enjoyed this story, it’s low-angst but filled with heat and sweet. There were some great funny moments and I loved how genuine Matt and Ryan are, I’d definitely want to be friends with them. Overall this was a very enjoyable comfort read that I have no doubt I will go back to when I want that happy heart smiley feeling!

Well this is just a wonderful, sweet story about two men who are just supposed to be! I really loved the tenderness K.C. Wells brings to this story and these characters. Christian was horribly injured years ago and it left him with some bad scars. He’s spent the last eight years living in isolation, not wanting people to see him. When Josh, a handyman he’s watched working in the area ends up being the one to do some work on his apartment, the two end up face to face and it’s not what either man expected. Josh doesn’t see a disfigured monster and Christian doesn’t want to hide from him.

I really enjoyed this story, it’s a slow burn without the overly dramatic angst, but it’s a sweet story. One of healing and friendship and love. I loved getting to know Christian and Josh as their relationship progressed. They have great personalities and I wanted to be friends with these two. This is one of those reads that just makes your heart happy – it’s one of those books you read when you want to feel good with fantastic characters who truly deserve to find that real, forever love.

Author Bio

Born and raised in the north-west of England, K.C. WELLS always loved writing. Words were important. Full stop. However, when childhood gave way to adulthood, the writing ceased, as life got in the way. K.C. discovered erotic fiction in 2009, when the purchase of a ménage storyline led to the startling discovery that reading about men in love was damn hot. In 2012, arriving at a really low point in life led to the desperate need to do something creative. An even bigger discovery waited in the wings—writing about men in love was even hotter….

K.C. now writes full-time and is loving every minute of her new career. The laptop still has no idea of what hit it… it only knows that it wants a rest, please. And it now has to get used to the idea that where K.C goes, it goes.

And as for those men in love that she writes about? The list of stories just waiting to be written is getting longer… and longer….

K.C. loves to hear from readers.

This was a fun read – I loved the setting and the characters and the story as a whole. Elin Gregory delivers an entertaining tale with Mal and Rob and their adventure. Mal is an archaeologist who has just moved to the history rich town to run the local museum. He quickly meets Rob, the digger driver and the two have an instant connection. When a discovery is made on a building site that has some major historical value, the town and Rob and Mal are tested.

I think Elin Gregory does a fantastic job of creating this world, these characters feel very authentic, the good and the rough. I loved the way they were all connected with each other and their history. Mal is the newcomer in this community and there are some challenges for him, understanding the significance of the family ties is important and unfortunately tests his budding relationship with Rob more than once. But these two are so right for each other, they are good at finding their way back together. I loved the relationship between them, they definitely made me smile! Their relationship is sweet and just meant to be.

There is a good mix of quirky characters, sweet love and a very interesting discovery. There’s a bit of drama but nothing overly angsty, just added to the story. Overall, this was a fun read that I enjoyed from start to finish.

Author Bio

Elin Gregory lives in South Wales and works in a museum in a castle built on the edge of a Roman Fort! She reckons that’s a pretty cool job.

Elin usually writes on historical subjects, and enjoys weaving the weird and wonderful facts she comes across in her research into her plots. She likes her heroes hard as nails but capable of tenderness when circumstances allow. Often they are in danger, frequently they have to make hard choices, but happy endings are always assured.

Current works in progress include one set during the Great War, another in WW2, one set in the Dark Ages and a series of contemporary romances set in a small town on the Welsh border.

Ebb and Flow

Title: Ebb and Flow

Author: Andrew Grey

Series: Love’s Charter (Book 2)

Genre:  M/M Contemporary Romance

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

Release Date: Aug 18 2017

Edition/Formats Available In: eBook & Print

Blurb/Synopsis:

To achieve happiness, they’ll have to find the courage to be their own men.

As first mate on a charter fishing boat, Billy Ray meets a lot of people, but not one of them has made him as uncomfortable as Skippy—because he’s drawn to Skippy as surely as the moon pulls the tides, and he’s almost as powerless to resist. Billy Ray has spent his life denying who he is to avoid the wrath of his religious father, and he can’t allow anyone to see through his carefully built façade.

Skippy is only in town on business and will have to return to Boston once he’s through. But he doesn’t count on Billy Ray capturing his attention and touching his heart. After all, his father has certain expectations, and one of them is not him staying in Florida.

Billy Ray doesn’t realize just how much he and Skippy have in common, though. They’re both living to please their fathers instead of following their own dreams—a fact that becomes painfully obvious when they get to know each other and realize how much joy they’ve denied themselves. While they can’t change the past, they can begin a future together and make up for lost time—as long as they’re willing to face the consequences of charting their own course.

Ebb and Flow is the second book in Andrew Grey’s Love’s Charter series and my first book in this series. I haven’t read the first one yet, and while I felt like there was a story there from some of the other characters I didn’t feel like I was really missing anything when it came to my feelings about Skippy and Billy Ray. (Although, I definitely want to read the first one!!) I really enjoyed this story and these characters and felt for what they both went through with their fathers.

Skippy and Billy Ray definitely don’t seem like a natural fit, Skippy is a successful lawyer and Billy Ray has lived in this small town his whole life and works on a fishing boat, but these two have a connection right away and soon find out they have more in common than they ever would have expected. I really liked these two together, they totally worked for me! Both of these men struggle with fathers who do not accept them and yet they spend their lives trying to be what those fathers want. When these two meet, it’s like something clicks for both of them and they realize there is more to life than their fathers opinions.

I liked Skippy but it was Billy Ray that really got to my heart. He is such a sweet guy but has experienced so little love and care in his life. I really loved seeing him grow and embrace his relationship with Skippy. He becomes so much stronger and is a great match for Skippy, showing him what is really important.  Overall, I really did enjoy this book and the characters and am really looking forward to more of this series!

Cinnamon Eyes is such a sweet, good for your heart read! I really enjoyed this story and Cory and Asher, such wonderful men. I found this to be a story of love and finding your place in the world.

Cory has been struggling with depression and has finally found some help and it working to improve his life. When his therapist asked him what would make him happy, it was Asher that he thought of and now he’s determined to find his friend again. Not only does Cory find Asher, the connection they shared so many years ago is stronger than ever. Now it’s up to these two to figure out what exactly they mean to each other and if they are going to have a future together.

These two are just beautiful together! Both men have such wonderful hearts that you just have to root for them. Cory has struggled for so long, the expectations of his parents and grandfather weighing him down and preventing him from being happy, but with Asher back in his life it’s like he can finally breathe and speak up for himself. I loved the strength and support that Asher immediately became for Cory. And the same can be said about what Cory brings back to Asher’s life, he’s happy again. This is one of those stories where two people are just meant to be and once they are together again it’s like the puzzle is finally complete.

Cory and Asher definitely have some tough things thrown at them, Asher’s father and Cory’s relationship with his family, but they deal with things together and support each other. I really enjoyed the flow of this story and how, for me, the focus was on the good of these two together and finally finding that healthy, happy place. This is definitely a book to pick up for that feel-good read that makes you smile and leaves your heart happy! Sweet and adorable, Cory and Asher are fantastic!

Excerpt

When the song ended, I opened my eyes and clapped with the others. He didn’t look up or say anything, just started strumming another slow song on the strings. Judging by the cheers from the room, it was a popular one.

And then he lifted his head, opened his eyes, and started singing.

I gasped.

It was him. Asher.

Both my hands flew to my face and covered my mouth.

Sixteen years later and I still would have recognized him anywhere. The hair was as unruly as ever, and just as rock ‘n’ roll as his voice. The jawline so sharp he could probably cut glass with it. And the nose was still a little too big for his face.

I couldn’t see his green eyes from here, but I remembered them vividly. The pale color of a leaf newly broken out of its bud in spring, was such a stark contrast to his black eyelashes and olive complexion and had always hypnotized me with their beauty.

When he started singing, his voice pulled me out of my initial shock.

Two best friends

Like no one had ever seen before

Always together

happy and troublesome and wild

Sharing scraped knees

and high flying dreams

Carefree as the clouds in the sky

The boy with laughing cinnamon eyes

And I

The words struck a chord inside me. They reminded me of our friendship, all the way down to the scraped knees. Had he written this song? Had our friendship inspired him?

Then one day

he shimmered with a different light

Just one look at him

made my heart ache, stutter and want

I felt the same

pouring from his soul

A longing for more between us

The boy with loving cinnamon eyes

And I

He sang with such emotion, and the pronouns he used didn’t escape me. Asher was singing to a man, and my stomach made a hopeful jump.

Our story

didn’t have a fairytale ending

He had to leave me

and all I could do was to cry

But with no choice

I had to let go

We hugged and were saying goodbye

The boy with grieving cinnamon eyes

And I

I swallowed. I didn’t understand. That sounded just like … I shut down that thought immediately. It couldn’t be.

It’s been years

and my life has never been the same

I’m often wond’ring

what could have been if he’d stayed

Maybe one day

I’ll see him again

In dreams we were never apart

My boy with the sweet cinnamon eyes

And I

My boy with loving cinnamon eyes

And I

After the last chord rang out, the bar was deadly silent for a heartbeat, and then everyone started cheering and clapping and whistling.

Everyone except me.

I folded my arms on the table in front of me and collapsed with my forehead on top of them and my face hidden in the dark space between.

Had I heard what I thought I’d just heard?

Was that song … about us?

Had he had feelings for me too, back then?

The thought made me shake, and I grabbed my elbows and squeezed to keep myself from flying apart. I took a deep breath and didn’t let it out until my lungs screamed and burned in protest. I repeated the process several times until my teeth had stopped chattering and my heart had slowed its furious pace.

I was still hiding when someone cleared their throat in my vicinity.

“Excuse me? Benji said you wanted to talk to me? Are, uh, are you all right?”

His voice was as deep when he spoke as when he sang, and it sent a shiver down my spine, completely different from the previous desperate shaking. I took a deep breath and raised my head. Forcing myself to face him.

At first, he didn’t seem to recognize me. He searched my face for clues, but it only took a few moments for the spark of realization to light up his eyes.

“Cory?” His voice was gravellier than ever. “Cory, is that you?”

Author Bio

Nell Iris is a romantic at heart who believes everyone deserves a happy ending. She’s a bona fide bookworm (learned to read long before she started school), wouldn’t dream of going anywhere without something to read (not even the ladies room), loves music (and singing along but let’s face it, she’s not Celine Dion), and is a real Star Trek nerd (Make it so). She loves words, poetry, wine, and Sudoku, and absolutely adores elephants!

Nell believes passionately in equality for all regardless of race, gender or sexuality, and wants to make the world a better, less hateful, place.

Nell is a 40-something bisexual Swedish woman, married to the love of her life, and a proud mama of a grown daughter. She left the Scandinavian cold and darkness for warmer and sunnier Malaysia a few years ago, where she spends her days writing, surfing the Internet, enjoying the heat, and eating good food. One day she decided to chase her life long dream of being a writer, sat down in front of her laptop, and wrote a story about two men falling in love.

Nell Iris writes gay romance, prefers sweet over angsty, and wants to write diverse and different characters.
