Hearts & Health Series

Dr. Casper Rollins knows how to have fun. The love of his life, Kage Myers, lived every moment to the fullest before he died. Now, Casper goes skydiving, mountain-climbing or on other adrenaline-soaked adventures when he wants to feel closer to his lost love.

Medical director Eric Holtz is married to his work — so much so his husband left him. But when his niece shows up, pregnant and in need of an ally, Eric suddenly has family again. Unfortunately, her obstetrician, Casper Rollins, is sexy enough to turn Eric into a blushing adolescent.

What begins as a game to break Eric of his workaholic tendencies escalates into scorching sex and feelings that can’t be ignored. Casper never planned to give his heart to anyone other than Kage, and Eric won’t accept anything less.

If these two want a future, they’ll have to embrace the lesson Kage taught Casper long ago: You only live once.

I have really enjoyed this series and I think this book is my favorite so far! I totally fell in love with Casper and Eric! This story wasn’t quite what expected and far more emotional and I love that about it! A sweet story, but one that deals with loss and pain and eventually opening your heart to love again.

Casper and Eric, oh my heart, these two truly deserve happiness! Casper lost his boyfriend, the love of his life, while in medical school and has never let anyone into his heart again. He lives for adventure and fun and all the things Kage has missed out on. He has hookups but he never lets it get too far, that is until he meets Eric and his niece. Eric is a workaholic, devoted to his job, so much so that his husband left him for another man. He stays busy running the hospital and doesn’t have much time for fun, but then one day his niece shows up on his doorstep, pregnant and with no where else to go. Eric welcomes her into his home and between her and Casper he may just learn there really is more to life than working.

Eric and Casper start out just having fun together, the chemistry is undeniable but it’s not supposed to go any further. But of course it does and it’s clear that both of these men mean more to each other than they ever intended. I loved them together, they really do seem to bring out the best in each other and it just made my heart happy. Casper doesn’t think it’s possible to love again though and pushes Eric away, the feelings are too real. I loved the angst and drama in this book, it was just right! I felt for these two and everything they went through and just wanted them to be happy! As their journey all comes together it made my heart all warm and fuzzy! These two both grow together and I truly enjoyed it from start to finish, a great mix of emotion in this story! Definitely my favorite read from D.J. Jamison!

“This isn’t exactly what I had in mind when you asked if I wanted to have fun,” Eric said, gasping for breath.

Casper laughed, one hand clutching his stomach and his other gripping Eric’s wrist and tugging. Eric was having just a bit more difficulty than Casper in climbing from the top of a trash bin to a tree to the roof of the downtown library.

Thankfully, dusk had fallen, and they were on the backside of the library, where they were less likely to be noticed. He’d never live it down if he was arrested for loitering on the roof of a public property. It was hardly the kind of publicity a medical director needed to generate.

Eric finally heaved himself onto the mostly flat, asphalt roof with Casper’s assistance. He dropped down on his back and stared at a sky painted with the pink and orange streaks of sunset. The sun, still a molten ball in the sky, dropped slowly behind puffy clouds that were beginning to look more like cotton candy, all pink and soft around the edges.

Casper settled beside him, crossing his arms under his head. “It’s worth it now, though, right?”

Unlike Eric, Casper had jumped from trash bin to tree to roof with the agility of a teenager. Lying as he was, with his arms folded behind his head, his triceps bulged. Eric found that a prettier sight than the sunset.

“You know, the hospital’s taller. I have a key to the roof. We could have saved ourselves a lot of trouble and had a great view of the sunset.”

“You can just go up the stairwell and right onto the roof?”

“Yep,” Eric said, a bit smugly. “The helipad is up there, so there has to be access. It’s rare for us to receive a life flight, but it does happen.”

Casper made an obnoxious buzzing noise. “You’re venturing awfully close to shop talk, and besides, where’s the fun in walking up some stairs?”

Eric huffed a rueful laugh. “It’s more fun than a broken ankle.”

“No ankles were broken,” Casper chastised. “Now look at that gorgeous sky and enjoy yourself.”

Eric reached out and traced a blaze of orange inked on the pale skin of Casper’s bicep. “I’d rather look at this.”

Casper twitched, but he didn’t pull away. His head swiveled, light blue eyes fixing on Eric. “They always like the ink,” he murmured.

Eric flushed and pulled away. Turning his eyes back to the sky, which was less blinding than Casper’s beautiful body, he asked what he’d always wondered. “Do they mean something to you?”

“It’s artwork imprinted on my skin, so yeah, it means something to me.”

Eric risked a glance. “Of course.” He tried again. “But sometimes people get tattoos because they like the art. Other times, there’s a deeper symbolism in them.”

“You want to know the story behind my ink?”

Eric nodded, his eyes back on the swirls of color he could see on Casper’s bicep. As he watched, Casper grabbed the back of his T-shirt and peeled it up and over his head, dropping it into his lap.

Eric’s eyes roamed Casper’s body, taking in the paleness of his skin and the tautness of the muscle beneath it. Casper sat at an angle, turned with his shoulder toward Eric, so the vivid turquoise and orange of his tattoo captured Eric’s attention before he could get lost in a full study of the man’s body.

“It’s a lizard,” he said in surprise.

“A chameleon,” Casper said.

The chameleon clung to a branch that curved along the shape of Casper’s upper arm, blending in and out of leaves that wound around the image. The chameleon, where it was visible, was drawn in a bold style, with vivid hues setting it off from the parts of its body that vanished into the artwork. Large eyes and a wide grin imbued it with a personality, reminding Eric just a bit of the Cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland.

“It’s incredible,” Eric said, leaning closer to study it. The longer he looked, the more detail he could pick out, from subtly shaded scales to hints of the lizard behind the leaf work. “Chameleons change to match their surroundings, so what does this symbolize?”

“Mostly? Change. Both the ability to adapt to the changes in my life, but also the ability to be the change. Is that deep enough for you?”

Eric smiled. “Is your middle name Plato?”

Casper snorted as he grabbed his T-shirt and pulled it over his head. “Flattery will get you everywhere.”

As Casper lowered the shirt, a hint of ink on his back caught Eric’s eye. He put out a hand to stop the lowering of Casper’s shirt, leaning to the side for a look. Casper’s back was as gorgeous as the rest of him, broad and tapering to his waist with a muscle definition Eric could never hope to replicate in his own body. Casper was doing something right, even if was working out at the gym religiously like any self-respecting gay man. Eric, quite obviously, didn’t respect his body as a temple, unless it was as a temple that had crumbled to a pile of rubble.

“What about this one?” he asked.

He could just make out what looked like a hoop with flames around it.

To his surprise, Casper shifted away and tugged his shirt down firmly. “I didn’t bring you up here to talk about all my tattoos.”

Casper’s tone was light and teasing, but his eyes were guarded, and Eric didn’t want to ruin what had been a fun outing with an interesting guy. So, he flirted.

“I was kind of hoping you brought me up here for more than a pretty sunset.”

Casper settled back onto his elbows, looking up at Eric with a genuine grin. “Is that right?”

Eric licked his lips nervously, looking at the perfect male body stretched out before him. Casper’s shoulders stretched the fabric of his shirt, pulling it tight across his chest, and his jeans hugged his muscled thighs. Casper was without a doubt the most gorgeous man Eric had ever seen.

But it had been a long time since he’d made a move. Tentatively, he rested his hand on Casper’s stomach, feeling his ab muscles tighten at his light touch.

“Seems like a good make-out spot,” Eric said.

“Does it?” Casper asked with an impish grin. “Maybe we should test it out.”

“Definitely,” Eric said, before leaning in. “But fair warning? I’m out of practice.”

“It’s just like riding a bike,” Casper murmured before their lips met in a kiss. It was soft, sweet. Tentative, because Eric was too timid to plunge his tongue in and taste Casper, no matter how much he wanted that.

Eric lifted his head, needing a moment to get his bearings after his first kiss in far too long. “That’s not at all like riding a bike.”

Casper laughed, eyes crinkling up. “You call that a make-out? Get back here.”

He slipped his hand into Eric’s hair and pulled him into a longer, deeper, wetter kiss. Casper eased onto his back, lying flat on the roof, and pulled Eric down with him. Even though Casper was the one pinned to the rooftop, he took control of the kiss, flicking his tongue playfully and nibbling at Eric’s lips until he opened up.

Eric smoothed his left hand over Casper’s chest and stomach, reveling in the firmness of the muscled body beneath him. Casper was young, gorgeous and incredibly fit. Way out of Eric’s league. But for some crazy reason, Casper liked him.

Happy Monday! Well, it is because I’m so excited to be a part of the Review Tour for the audio version of Under the Boardwalk by Felice Stevens, narrated by Nick J Russo! I loved this book reading it and even more listening to it! I hope you’ll check out my review (audio and book) and there’s a giveaway too!

Length: 3hrs 56 minutes

Beneath the famous Brooklyn landmark, love is hidden but not denied: All his life, Alexi Kharpov has dreamed of traveling to unknown exciting places instead of working at his family’s frozen custard stand on the famous Coney Island boardwalk. Every year is the same until a gorgeous man picks a spot in front of his stand to sing, captivating him with his beautiful voice. After two summers of listening, it might finally be time for him to cross that boardwalk and take a chance.

Opera singer Cameron Maxwell has traveled the world, but the sight of the beautiful man serving custard to tourists touches his heart like nothing ever has before. A summer fling might be exactly what he needs to put his problems out of his mind, but the last thing Cam expects is to want the summer to last forever.

It’s a season of discovery for both men who learn to dig deep within their heads and hearts to decide whether secrets old and new should remain buried, or if love is too important to keep hidden under the boardwalk.

Audio Review

4.5 Stars

So I really enjoyed this book when I read it, I fell for these characters and loved their journey and I can honestly say that I enjoyed the audio version even more! Nick J Russo does a fantastic job bringing these characters and their story to life! I felt like he really delivers on the accents and different personalities and just absolutely nailed it for me. This was everything I look for in an audio book, delivering so much emotion that I just didn’t want it to end.

I’ve been a Felice Stevens fan for quite a while now, she writes these amazing swoony loving stories and now I’m a Nick J Russo fan for bringing them to life in a whole new way. This isn’t a long book but it’s great and if you’re looking for a quick, make your heart so freaking happy audio book, I highly recommend Under the Boardwalk!

Original Book Review

4 Stars

Once again, Felice Stevens creates a sweet, loveable story that goes right to the heart! Under the Boardwalk is a touching story about two men who set out to enjoy a summer fling and end up with so much more! I absolutely adored Alexi and Cam and their journey together.

Alexi works in his father’s custard stand at the beach and every day wishes there was more in his life, he wants to travel and have new experiences. He notices the cute guy with the beautiful voice who sings on the boardwalk, but never has to guys to say hello. Cam just wants to sing, he’s traveled and seen the world and now just wants to sing. He lives his life in the present, and after watching the guy in the custard stand for a summer it’s time to make his move. A great summer fling is just what he wants. These two have instant chemistry together and while they both intend to keep it simple for the summer, real and deep feelings develop fast for Cam and Alexi.

These two are so perfect for each other, yes so very different but also so perfect. Cam comes from a loving, supportive and open family while Alexi’s Russian family is incredibly traditional. As the two spend time together, Alexi sees what it is like to be open about who he is and what he wants. I loved seeing that growth in him, really embracing who he is and having Cam by his side now matter what.

This is a shorter story, but Felice manages to pack a lot of story in there. I really felt for these two, all of the emotions as they figured it all out! There are sweet, tender swoony moments, hot passion and beautiful young love. Sure these two are tested, but their love is real. Both of these men grow together and find happiness in each other. Felice Stevens delivers another emotion packed story that just makes my heart so very happy!

About Felice

I have always been a romantic at heart. I believe that while life is tough, there is always a happy ending around the corner, My characters have to work for it, however. Like life in NYC, nothing comes easy and that includes love, but getting there is oh so fun and oh so sexy.

I live in New York City with my husband and two children. My day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass (or two of red wine). I practice law but daydream of a time when I can sit by a beach somewhere and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there are bound to be a few bumps along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.

I’m a big fan of second chance love stories and I enjoyed this one! This is a quick, sweet read about learning what is really important in life and not giving up.

Jude was crushed when his fiancé Vincent left him two years ago, but he’s been trying to rebuild, until one night Vincent knocks on his door, telling him he made a mistake. Jude doesn’t know how to feel at first but finally comes to terms with listening to what Vincent has to say. Vincent wants a second chance, and the chance to explain what happened two years ago.

I felt like this story was a quick snapshot into their lives, it feels like there was a lot that happens before and after this piece. I definitely enjoyed these two and how they finally found happiness together. Both Jude and Vincent grow and learn about each other, things they may have overlooked the first time around! They definitely made my heart happy and I would recommend this read when you’re in the mood for something quick but emotional!

I was still wide awake when someone knocked on my door half an hour later, and I knew who it was before I even got out of bed. Who else could it be at four in the morning but Vee?

I didn’t bother to turn on the lights or get dressed, and I opened the door in my boxers. My heart lurched at the sight of him. He still hadn’t shaved and he had black rings under his eyes. His usual confidence was nowhere to be seen. Usually, his presence took over the entire room, but today he looked as if he was trying to make himself smaller.

Without a word, I stepped aside and let him in. I grabbed his hand and led him to the den. “We’ll talk in the morning. You can sleep on the couch,” I said. “I’ll get some sheets.” I got some fresh linen from the closet and grabbed an extra blanket — he was always cold when he slept — and made up the sofa for him. He didn’t move from the spot where I’d let go of his hand, and he didn’t take his eyes off me.

“You gonna sleep in your clothes?” I asked.

He shook his head and peeled off his lavender V-neck sweater — probably cashmere — and flipped open the jeans’ button while I fluffed his pillows and spread out the cozy blanket. When he pulled down his pants, I had to avert my eyes. To stop myself from staring, I jogged to the kitchen and brought back a bottle of water for him.

He was tense when I returned as if he’d thought I’d gone to bed without saying goodnight. I didn’t like seeing him uncertain. He was a guy who was assured of himself. Never doubted himself or his intelligence. But he was never arrogant. No, he hid a kind and generous man behind his cocky smile. It was one of the things that had attracted me to him in the first place; all the different layers of his personality. The sides of him he only ever showed me.

“Go to bed,” I murmured and lifted the blanket in invitation. After a brief hesitation, he lay down and curled up on the couch. I tucked him in — pulling the blanket all the way up to his chin — and made sure it covered his naked toes, too.

I resisted leaning down and kissing him on the cheek. I managed to keep myself from ruffling his hair or touching the unfamiliar stubble to see if it was as silky as I imagined. And I didn’t beg him to take off his T-shirt so I could run my fingers through his treasure trail. I simply gave him a smile and said, “Sleep well Lovee.”

As soon as the old endearment slipped out I wished I could take it back. He, on the other hand, lit up, and for the first time since he’d knocked on my door yesterday, something looking a lot like hope shone from his eyes.

I whirled around and ran out. Dove under my covers, and buried my face in my pillow, not moving until my lungs screamed for oxygen.

Gasping for air, I tried to find a comfortable sleeping position. My questions had disappeared and been replaced with the image of him on my couch, all pleading eyes, and heartbreaking vulnerability.

I turned to the other side and fluffed my pillow, but it was too hot from my breathing into it, so I flipped it over. I rolled over on my back and flung my arm over my eyes. Then I tried to lie on my stomach with my arm tucked under the pillow, but it quickly went numb. It got too hot under the cover, so I threw it off and then it got too cold. I shivered and pulled it back up, but kept a leg outside.

After twisting in my bed for what felt like an eternity, I gave up. I sighed, stood, and padded back into the den. Vee looked up at me when I entered, as awake as I was. Tilting my head in the direction of my bedroom I said, “Bring your blanket.”

He scrambled off the couch and followed me. Tucked under my covers at a safe distance from him, I could finally fall asleep. The last thing I remembered before closing my eyes, was his sooty lashes fanned out on pale cheeks, and the snuffling sounds he made as he slept.

If you don’t know what you want, would you recognize it if you found it?

Miguel Ramirez is the definition of pochos; a half-breed-white-washed Mexican–American who doesn’t speak Spanish (also unapologetically bisexual). Three years ago he arrived in Skagit a broken man having barely managed to escape an abusive relationship. Slowly, he’s rebuilt his life. He’s tried hard to discard his deepest desires and be happy with what life has doled out. Family feels out of his grasp, no one really wants to keep a stray after all. Except, maybe, a red-haired stranger with a galaxy of freckles covering his face who seems to encompass everything Miguel’s learned to avoid.

Nate Richardson; focused, solid, reliable, career-minded, Federal Agent. No time for relationships outside of work. Then he runs into Miguel with his crazy green eyes, rakish smile and outrageous sense of humor. Nate starts thinking about Miguel as more than just another guy. Nate was sure he didn’t care about sex and didn’t believe in love…he’d never met Miguel Ramirez before.

Things quickly heat up between Nate and Miguel. Crime is heating up in Skagit as well. Nate is sidelined when the case he is working on reaches a frustrating standstill. In the meantime, unnerving incidents transpire, some literally on Nate’s doorstep. Will outside forces—or their own baggage—keep Miguel and Nate apart? What exactly is family, and can Miguel and Nate make one of their own?

I have really enjoyed this series and Elle Keaton’s characters, they are a bit broken but still great and Miguel and Nate are fantastic additions to this group. They are two very different men from different backgrounds and seem unlikely at first, but they find something special together and I loved their journey.
Miguel has spent the last few years trying to rebuild his life after getting away from his abusive ex Justin. He has a good job working with Buck in his shop and is trying to get his stuff together. He thinks he’s escaped his ex, but he starts to notice things, and wonders if he’s just adjusting to a new home and life or if he’s actually got a stalker. Nate made the choice to move away from his disapproving father and to Washington and work for the FBI. He loves his job and lives a pretty simple life. He’s a bit awkward in social situations but he’s a sweetheart of a guy. A chance meeting at a wedding brings these two together and though neither of them expected anything special, that’s what they find. But, it’s not an easy journey, Miguel is still afraid of his ex stalking him and Nate is new to any kind of dating. Nate might feel like an anchor for him, but that’s scary in it’s own way.
I really enjoyed the way this story flowed, getting to know these guys and how their relationship developed. Neither of these guys have much positive relationship experience and when it seems like they may be able to make it work, the worst happens and threatens them both. I really enjoyed the last bit of this book, as it all came together and I really got to see these two finally get the happy that they both so deserved. River Home shows that real family isn’t always about being related by blood, that it can also be those that we find along the way to love. Miguel and Nate balance each other in a way that just made my heart happy and I felt like their ending was just absolutely perfect for them. Another great read from Elle Keaton, I totally fell in love with these guys and am already looking forward to what is next!

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

Growing up, the three of us were friends.

He was the nerd.

I was the playboy.

She was the beauty.

Deep down, I only ever wanted her. I kept it inside because Rory and I made a pact that our friend, Amber, was off-limits.

He lied.

I went off to college, and he got the girl.

Amber never knew how I felt.

They were together for years—before he broke her heart.

Through it all and across the miles, she and I casually stayed in touch.

When my job sent me to Boston for a three-month contract position, Amber let me stay in her spare room.

Still reeling from her breakup, she’d sworn off men.

One night, I opened her computer to find the shock of my life. She’d hesitantly contacted a male escort company. Afraid to date and get her heart broken again, she was looking for sex with no strings.

Every emotion imaginable ran through me: protectiveness, jealousy—curiosity.

Amber had chosen Gentleman Number Nine and sent him a message.

She opened up to him, confessing, among other things, her physical attraction to her friend— me. But she considered me off-limits—and she thought I was a manwhore. (Ironic, considering the circumstances.)

Eventually, she set up a date to meet Gentleman Nine at a hotel.

When she showed up several nights later to meet him, she got the surprise of her life to see me standing there—with an offer I hoped she wouldn’t refuse.

Penelope Ward I absolutely love you and your books and Amber and Channing are exactly why! I adored this story and Channing stole my heart! This is the perfect example of totally meant to be friends to lovers story, it’s one that I already want to go back and read again!

Growing up Amber, Channing and Rory were the best of friends, kind of an odd grouping but friends none the less. Rory and Channing made a pact together not to date Amber since it was clear both young men were attracted to her, but Rory broke that when Channing went off to college. Years later Rory also breaks Amber’s heart when he tells her they should see other people. As Channing ends up Amber’s temporary roommate for a few months the two have the chance to reconnect, and then some when he discovers her looking on the internet for a hookup guy…maybe he can help.

This story surprised me and ultimately took a turn I didn’t expect but my goodness I loved it! I go into a Penelope Ward book expecting to fall head over heels and that’s definitely what I got, but with some good twists for me. Emotionally I felt like I was all over the place, expecting to feel one way and there’s Ms. Ward yanking my heart all over the place. There is fantastic chemistry and passion between Amber and Channing, but they also have this amazing connection built on years of friendship. This is a story of friendship, healing and true love and an absolute MUST READ!

Erik Gunnarsson’s dream had always been to play in the NHL, he just never imagined he’d land a contract with the Railers. Who would have thought that fate would put him on the same team as Stanislav Lyamin; the man whose heart he’d callously broken?

Secrets and lies had defined their summer relationship, and the choice that Erik made to end it all haunts him still. In the middle of a messy divorce and with a baby in tow, Erik finds himself back in Stan’s life. Now all he has to do is be the best dad he can be, prove to the team that he deserves the chance to stay on the roster and try his hardest to get Stan to forgive him.

Is it possible to persuade a man who hates you to give love a second chance?

I have really enjoyed this series and I’ve been looking forward to Stan’s story. He’s a bit of an odd character, a big Russian guy who speaks very broken English and talks to his ‘pipes’ but I have to say, I adored him. He has a such a sweet, good heart, totally swoon-worthy. His sweet heart was broken though by fellow hockey player and new teammate Erik after they fell for each other but Erik took off and ended up married with a baby. There’s more to their story though, and it’s sweet and loving and a journey to honestly and love.

Erik didn’t expect to end up with a baby or an ex-wife but sometimes life throws some major curve balls. He was forced to walk away from Stan to try to do the right thing and now he finds himself a single father, the sole provider for his son and on a new hockey team face to face with Stan. This is one of those stories where the characters have to learn to be open and honest with each other, and add in a language barrier and it becomes even more challenging. These two are pretty special though, they have a very good understanding of each other and it’s easy to see that these two men truly love each other, despite past mistakes.

I really liked that this story wasn’t overly angsty, it made me smile a lot and just made my heart feel good! It’s about how these two take advantage of their second chance together and find the happiness they deserve. Stan and his use (or misuse) of the English language cracked me up, I looked forward to his POV for sure! Stan has always known what he wanted but seeing Erik realize it all just warmed my heart. This is definitely a sweet addition to this series, I loved the way it all came together and am looking forward to the next installment!

There are many people I would have rather seen standing on the ice of my practice arena than Erik. For example my beloved sister, Galina, my sainted mother, Arina, my cat, Lucy, or my new gay American heartthrob, Zachary Quinto.

Zachary would be wearing only a smile even though it’s cold on the ice.

But no, none of them were standing in front of me wearing a Railers sweater and curls. Those damn golden curls. They’d always tempted me beyond sense. As had his mouth. And the way he would tilt his head when he was trying to understand me out of bed. In bed? There was no language barrier. Our bodies had always been tuned to each other like radio waves to a satellite dish.

Even now, I felt the low hum of his presence in my veins. I had feared this moment would come. From the first time I’d heard his name mentioned as being a new member of the Rush, our AHL feeder team, I’d known he would eventually stand in front of me, tipping his head, with his curls, his eyes and his mouth.

Connor was looking at me as if he expected something from me. Ah yes, words. He wanted me to say something. How did “go fuck a donkey” translate into English?

“We are known to each other.”

I skated to my net, mask perched on my head, and tried to focus. The humming in my blood was unsettling. Closing my eyes, I let the blue ice under my skates talk to me. Opening myself up to the sounds of hockey, the stress of seeing Erik again lessened. I whispered to the pipes as I tapped them. Asked them in Russian if they were going to be my friends during this practice.

“Uh, hey, I know this is a strict breach of protocol and all…but is there a problem between you and Gunner?”

I glanced to the left. Tennant stood there, geared up, his stick casually resting across his shoulders. So Erik now had his American hockey nickname. Why didn’t I have a new American hockey nickname? Pah. I was being petty. It tasted bad on my tongue.

“Gunner is okay person from time back in space.” Was that right? English was hard to speak. It made no sense. How could there be three ways to spell one word? Russian was simple. Strong. Pure. A language of passion and spirit. American was whiney and tied my brain into knots. No, that was not true. American was a wonderful language. It was me who was whiney and unhappy. “Time back. In the back of time. Is bad time to talk. Go away.”

New Release Review: The Lucky Ones by Tiffany Reisz

We are thrilled to share this new release from Tiffany Reisz – The Lucky Ones! As a huge fan of hers, I was so excited to read this book and Ms. Reisz did not disappoint! Twists and turns and love, this book has it all! I hope you’ll check out my review!

Happy Reading!

The Lucky Ones

They called themselves “the lucky ones.” They were seven children either orphaned or abandoned by their parents and chosen by legendary philanthropist and brain surgeon Dr. Vincent Capello to live in The Dragon, his almost magical beach house on the Oregon Coast. Allison was the youngest of the lucky ones living an idyllic life with her newfound family…until the night she almost died, and was then whisked away from the house and her adopted family forever.

Now, thirteen years later, Allison receives a letter from Roland, Dr. Capello’s oldest son, warning her that their father is ill and in his final days. Allison determines she must go home again and confront the ghosts of her past. She’s determined to find out what really happened that fateful night–was it an accident or, as she’s always suspected, did one of her beloved family members try to kill her?

But digging into the past can reveal horrific truths, and when Allison pieces together the story of her life, she’ll learns the terrible secret at the heart of the family she once loved but never really knew.

A vivid and suspenseful tale of family, grief, love—and the dark secrets that bind everything together—Tiffany Reisz’s latest is enthralling to the final page.

Tiffany Reisz is one of those authors that for me, just creates magic with her worlds. I always feel as if I’m transported into the world that these characters are in, no matter what the story line and I feel the same way about The Lucky Ones. This book was different, it was mysterious and sometimes disturbing and at other times romantic. There is a weirdness to this story that yes made me uncomfortable at times, but wow does it make a great journey! Tiffany Reisz does a fantastic job of showing how different a romance/love story can be!

Allison spent some of her childhood living in foster care in a house on the coast that looked like a dragon. She had foster siblings that she loved and Dr. Capello, her foster father, took care of kids who didn’t seem to have anyone else. But then a mysterious accident that almost kills Allison has her living with an older aunt, never hearing from her foster father or siblings again. That is until, years later, she receives a letter from her ‘brother’ informing her that their father is dying. She reluctantly returns to Oregon and the dragon house, not only to say goodbye to Dr. Capello but also to try to figure out what happened to her all those years ago.

Oh, I loved this story. It didn’t always make sense to me and sometimes it shocked me but WOW what a journey. There are twists and turns and holy crap moments for sure. It’s not a traditional romance but there is a love story here, one with so many layers. As Allison, Roland and the other ‘siblings’ learn the truth about themselves and their foster father it will reveal more than they may have ever wanted to know. This is one of those stories that will stay with me and I will definitely read again, there is just that much to it! Thank you Tiffany Reisz for another book that makes me think, makes me love and tests my comfort level!

This is a quick, but emotional read that reminds you of the power of love! I absolutely love how R.J. Scott can pack so much into a short story; totally delivers on the feels!

Seth and Casey are married, they’re that couple that everyone says will last forever, but these two are at a breaking point. After almost losing Seth in a fire a year ago, Casey does feel like he’s losing him now. Seth’s recovery from his injuries is slow going and he pretty much refuses to see the psychologist. He thinks he’s doing okay, focused on getting back to work, but he doesn’t realize how hard it is on Casey and just how much he takes his frustrations out on Casey. When a trip with Casey’s class meets a crazy winter storm Seth may be the only one able to save them, but he can they save their marriage.

Oooh this read got me right in the heart. I could feel for both of these guys and the things they were going through, and it just broke my heart. I love the way they sort through it all though. It’s all shiny and pretty and easy and these two both have to take a close look at what they really do want for their future. I adored the way it came together and how these two prove their love for each other. I definitely recommend this book for a quick, full of feeling but leaves you happy kind of read – this type of feeling is exactly why I love R.J. Scott!

“…New York’s LaGuardia and JFK International airports officially closed on Thursday afternoon due to the storm, according to the FAA. Both airports had been open earlier despite significant flight cancellations. LaGuardia resumed operations around 7 p.m. ET, while JFK said it planned to reopen sometime during the course of the night.”

Casey McGuire rinsed the last of the mugs and placed it on the drainer with the rest. For some reason, it was always mugs they ran out of in this house. Seth had this idea that the dishwasher ate them but Casey was convinced that they just needed a system to make sure they brought all the mugs back to the kitchen when they were done. Last week he’d found a mug in the bathroom, inside the cabinet, full of cold coffee.

Seth had sworn it wasn’t him, but Casey knew it had been.

He didn’t make a fuss. After all, what was one full coffee mug teetering on the edge of a glass shelf? In the grand scheme of things, it meant nothing.

The TV droned on behind him as he took a dishcloth and wiped the first of the mugs.

“…states from South Carolina to Maine are under a winter storm warning and the governors of Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey and New York have declared states of emergency. Forecasters say the northeast states can expect hurricane-force wind gusts and blinding snow…”

The news channels had been warning about this storm for a week, a huge dump of snow that would cripple the eastern seaboard, but that as yet hadn’t caused much concern here in Vermont. Casey glanced out of the window at the yard and wished for more snow. That way maybe Seth wouldn’t be able to leave the house, and possibly the two of them could have a rational conversation that didn’t end with Seth leaving and Casey wondering where the hell he was going wrong.

“…the situation is “ugly” and “dangerous,” and people should stay indoors…”

Last night, all Casey had said was that Seth shouldn’t forget about his appointment next morning. Seth left the house, clambering back into bed at some ungodly hour, reeking of beer or worse. In his sleep, Seth tried to pull Casey close, but Casey had deliberately scooted up and away, and left his husband in the bed.

Today, at ten, Seth had exploded, accusing Casey of meddling in things he didn’t understand, telling Casey he was fine and didn’t need a shrink.

Yet another night when one of them ended up on the couch.

Casey stiffened at Seth’s soft, gravelly voice. His chest was tight, he didn’t want to argue. He wanted Seth to admit there was a problem, because he couldn’t handle it anymore. Six months of this had taken its toll. Maybe if Seth had seen the specialists when he should’ve, maybe if he’d seen a counselor, then Casey would see he was trying.

Seth was in denial, and it was destroying their marriage.

He didn’t turn to face Seth; he’d made a decision in the early morning, packed a bag with what he could get without waking Seth, and decided they needed space. If Seth had space he might face up to himself instead of taking it out on Casey.

Seth slid his hands around Casey’s waist, resting his chin on Casey’s shoulder and sighed. He’d brushed his teeth so the only scent was peppermint, which at least was a step up from yesterday when he’d attempted a clumsy kiss with beer still on his breath.

“I’m sorry,” he murmured near Casey’s ear.

Casey could turn now, accept the apology, even offer one of his own for pushing Seth, and everything would be normal for a while. Seth could go back to pretending he was okay, and Casey could go back to walking on eggshells and avoiding conflict.

But what kind of a marriage was that?

What kind of a man did that make Casey?

“I know you are,” he said. Then he tensed because that wasn’t the answer Seth wanted, and Casey knew what would happen next. Seth would go straight onto defensive mode, give some bullshit about how he was a firefighter and didn’t need a counselor.

Meanwhile, Seth not accepting any of what he needed was tearing their marriage apart. Casey had been careful with him for a long time, after all, Seth had nearly died. But when months had passed and he was still refusing to listen to reason, that was when Casey realized he’d been wrong in accepting Seth’s view on what kind of healing he needed.

“I think we need some time apart,” Casey said, and placed the dried mug onto the counter. He eased away from Seth’s hold and moved to the other side of the kitchen table. Somehow, having it between them gave Casey the strength to do what he’d decided was the right thing. Seth had this way of holding him, with a near desperation that never failed to have Casey crumbling.

Seth didn’t answer at first. Casey stopped himself from repeating the words and hoped that Seth was just thinking. The only noise in the kitchen was the news, focusing on Greyhound buses and the routes being cancelled.

Oh my heart – A.L. Jackson delivers a story that will completely capture your heart with Follow Me Back! Right from the start I fell in love with these characters and was completely consumed by their story. It’s an emotional journey through guilt and pain that leads to forgiveness and true, pure love.
Neither Kale or Hope think there is room in their lives for a new relationship, both are hesitant of anything beyond one night, but there is a connection between them that cannot be denied. They are both broken people trying to make the best of what life has thrown at them, but also afraid to put their hearts on out there again.  Kale and Hope tread on a fine line of hope and fear, not sure which will win.
I really loved this journey, it was so very emotional and one that will stay with me. A.L. Jackson gives us two very beautiful but damaged souls that deserve happiness but don’t seem to know it. She also weaves in a twist of fate that I thought just might break me, but brings so much of this story together. I think this is a story that should be experienced, I don’t want to spoil any part of it, but I can say this an absolute must read, just have tissues handy. Another wonderful read from A.L. Jackson that has me waiting for what is next!

I can’t sleep…

When unrequited love leaves Dylan Hart sleepless and nursing his wounds, instinct draws him to the one place he’s found mindless respite in the past—Lovato’s. It’s a place for every fantasy — for crazy-hot encounters — where a night of insane NSA sex brings relief to Dylan’s fragile feelings.

It should be a perfect escape, and for one magical night it seems that way, but then worlds collide, and reality bites when his hookup desperately needs a friend. Surely Dylan can’t trust his instincts when friendship has bruised his heart so badly before?

It’s burying me alive…

The deck is stacked against former ballet dancer Angelo Giordano ever finding real love. At least visiting Lovato’s offers respite from a life defined by illness; a glimmer of light in the dull grey of his so-called life without dance. But then he encounters Dylan — a glorious ray of the brightest sunshine — who makes his heart pound once more with purpose.

Angelo’s mind is blown by this man, but the disease that ended his career won’t let him bask in new love. He’s drowning, and Dylan can’t save him while insecurities swamp them both. The only way to make it means confronting their demons.

If Dylan can turn his back on the past, and Angelo can face his uncertain future, maybe they can chase their dreams together.

Ok, I have to say these two really surprised me! I totally fell for Angelo and Dylan and their story. It’s got super hot chemistry and passion as well as a sweet love that develops between these two. They meet in a sex club, it’s supposed to be pretty much anonymous but a chance encounter brings these two men together and they just can’t seem to walk away from each other. I loved it!

Dylan works as a financial adviser and has just distanced himself from his best friend, trying to protect his heart. Angelo lost his dream of being a ballet dancer and now lives a life full of struggle and pain. One night of release brings Dylan and Angelo together, a night that rocks them both but a chance meeting is where everything really changes.

There’s no doubt a very physical connection between them, but what surprises them both is how much more there is there. It’s a bit rough for them at first, neither of them really able to see what’s happening, a part of the story I really enjoyed. These two just couldn’t stay away from each other and it was enjoyable to see that unfold, falling for each other without really getting it. They start to learn about each other, especially when Angelo’s illness makes itself known. Dylan is a fixer and he wants to take care of Angelo but is met with resistance. When it all becomes too much for Dylan and his sweet heart, they are really tested and true feelings come out.

I liked their journey together, it’s not all sweet and perfect but it’s perfect for them. They learn to work together, to lean on each other and open up. It was especially touching to see Angelo grow, life hasn’t always been kind to him and he’s learning how to manage that, with Dylan by his side. Overall, this was a strong story, these two falling in love and embracing life together but still being who they are. I really enjoyed this story and it’s one I know I will read again! Definitely looking forward to more from Garrett Leigh!
