After the death of his wife, Tanner Rowe takes a step toward making her dream come true and buys the house with the dilapidated barn she’d been inexplicably drawn to in the picturesque Upper Peninsula. But after a year, he still can’t get past his grief long enough to make the repairs he’d promised.

Recently out of prison, Cole Lachlan has little to his name. Homeless, broke, and without many options as a felon, Cole heads to Red Bluff with hopes of a second chance. There, he meets Tanner, whose loneliness mirrors his own and soon, Cole is trading room and board for rebuilding the burned-out barn on Tanner’s property that hasn’t been touched in seventy years.

Turns out, the barn holds a lot more secrets than either of them could have imagined. After unearthing a hidden journal from 1948, Cole and Tanner spend their evenings poring through the pages and reading about a young man pining after his best friend. As they delve deeper into this forbidden affair from the past, the more Cole and Tanner’s own relationship shifts—from acquaintance to friend…to undeniable attraction.

But as they begin to deal with the newness of falling in love amid Cole’s past and Tanner’s loss, they also become more determined to unravel the mystery of the young lovers who’ve captured their hearts, the rumors about the fire, and what really happened that fateful night.

Wow – this book was a punch in the feels! Holy moly, I feel like I’m still recovering but what a beautiful story! I think it’s very important to keep this spoiler free, this is a story that just needs to be experienced!!

Tanner and Cole are two men who are a bit broken and a bit lost in life when they meet. Fate has brought them together though and they are about to experience one hell of a journey together! It’s beautiful, powerful and heartbreaking as these two form a friendship that develops into something deeper and experience a journal that tells a tragic tale. Through it all there is healing and love and acceptance and it absolutely owned my heart! This is an absolute must read book!

Tanner’s eyes snapped open. He didn’t know what had woken him so suddenly, but the moment he did, he realized he’d fallen asleep with Cole on the couch, that Cole’s head was on his shoulder.

It was a little weird…and a little not weird…or maybe he was looking for it to be weird or not? As he sat there a moment, focusing on the heat of Cole against him, the feel of his head on his shoulder, it felt good. Christ, Cole felt good to him.

It wasn’t the first time that seeing Cole, touching his skin, studying his hands or his back, felt right. That truth hit him in the gut, so the moment Cole groaned in his sleep and turned his head, Tanner slipped out from under the blanket.

For a moment he considered trying to lay Cole down. Did his knee hurt? Was the position uncomfortable? But he didn’t know how to do it or if he should do it, and he suddenly really fucking needed to get out of the house.

Tanner shoved his feet into his shoes. Thankfully, he was wearing jeans and a tee he’d put on before going to look for Cole last night. His keys were on the kitchen counter, so he swooped them up and quietly sneaked out of the house.

Last night had been…something. How he could breathe easier after the loss of Emma, how much Cole’s friendship meant to him, Tom and Charlie, and falling asleep on the couch. It was…a lot, and he wished like hell he had his fishing supplies so he could go fishing.

So what could he do?

Guilt made his stomach tumble because he knew Cole would wake up and wonder where he was, might even think he’d done something wrong, which he hadn’t. Tanner just didn’t know how to do…whatever he was doing. It was like he was learning how to live again.

He drove around for a little while, taking in the small town he and Emma had loved. What would she think about his friendship with Cole? He knew Emma, and she would be glad Tanner had him, that he’d allowed himself to have someone.

The more he drove, the more he began to feel slightly foolish for leaving the way he had. Who cared if they fell asleep on the couch together? Who cared if having Cole around eased some of the weight in his chest?

So instead of driving around town for no reason, Tanner turned and headed for the general store. He’d get some bacon and eggs, then go home and make breakfast for them.

Audio Review & Giveaway: Lover by T.M. Smith

Lover

By: T.M. Smith

Life has not always been kind to Shannon Dupree. On the outside, he’s carefree and fun loving, but when it comes to his past, he’s evasive and secretive. Running away from emotionally bereft parents at just 15, Shannon escapes life with them but steps into the waiting arms of the devil.

Rory Landers is a rising star at the Bureau. His personal life, however, is nothing to write home about. He hopes to take his limited relationship with Frank Moore to the next level when they finally solve the Langford murder case, but that doesn’t turn out as planned. On the plus side, he meets free-spirited college senior Shannon Dupree.

Rand Davis finds himself 40-something and single when his partner of more than a decade is unfaithful. Taking over the Cold Case Squad frees up some of his time, and Rand welcomes newfound friendships within the Langford-Moore family circle. He thinks relationships are not in the cards for him until he meets an agent with an attitude and a vivacious blond that make him want so much more.

Past, present, pain, and suffering collide, ushering in the possibility of a life and love worth fighting for. Although their personalities couldn’t be more different, their three hearts beat the same. Shannon, Rory, and Rand learn the definition of love, commitment, and strength, and if they allow themselves, the trio will find all that and more – in each other.

4.5 Stars

I absolutely loved Survivor and was so excited about this book and TM Smith did not disappoint! The story is powerful and the narration is spot on, I think Nick J Russo completely captures the emotions and characters!!

This was an emotional journey and not the easiest story but it is powerful and so full of feeling! Shannon, Rory and Rand are amazing and bring so much to each other. I thought it was interesting that Shannon and Rory are an established couple and then Rand enters their life and both men are drawn to him. Rand as well, has feelings for both Shannon and Rory right from the start. It takes a while for the three of them to embrace their feelings but once they do, it felt natural the way they love each other.

I loved all parts of this story, there is drama and emotion but not overly angsty when it comes to the relationships. Overall, I enjoyed this from start to finish and think TM Smith does an amazing job telling stories about difficult situations and making the love shine! I’m already looking forward to the next book!

Excerpt…

Prologue

Shannon 2010
Heart
hammering in his chest, hands shaking, Shannon handed the attendant his ticket.
The light on the scanner turned green and beeped, and he almost wept with joy. “Enjoy
your flight, sir.” He nodded, took the piece of paper, and stuffed it into his
jeans pocket, forcing himself to walk the long hallway to the plane and not run
for his life, which was basically what he was doing. By now, Bruce would know
what Shannon had done—that he wasn’t at work and he wouldn’t be coming home.
It
had taken a year of patience and planning, convincing Bruce that he truly
wanted to volunteer three days a week at a local homeless shelter. Then he
saved every spare penny he could collect to purchase his ticket to freedom. His
steps faltered when he remembered the last time he’d tried to leave. It was the
angriest he’d ever seen Bruce, and that was saying a lot since the last three
years of his life were consumed by his once-gentle lover’s anger and twisted
pleasures. The early stages of their relationship were the happiest times of
Shannon’s life. Bruce was gorgeous and kind; he listened to Shannon—seemed to
support his aspirations to become a dancer and make a better life for himself
far away from the home he shared with his emotionally distant parents that paid
more attention to alcohol and arguments than to their fifteen-year-old son. Bruce
was kind and romantic, luring him with promises of love and a life where they
could be partners, equals. And Shannon fell for him…hook, line, and sinker.
He
sucked in a ragged breath, barely biting back the scream clawing its way up his
throat when someone bumped into him from behind. “Oh my, so sorry.” Shannon
looked over his shoulder, nodding at the little old lady that grinned up at
him. “Once the suitcase starts rolling, it’s hard for me to stop it sometimes.”
She chuckled.
“It’s
okay, no worries.” He exhaled sharply, the tension in his shoulders slowly
releasing. He couldn’t be so jumpy; it might draw attention he desperately needed
to avoid. But he couldn’t let his guard down either. Bruce and his driver, Tuan—also
known as Shannon’s warden—could very well be in the terminal that very minute
searching for him. Willing his body to relax, Shannon managed to put one foot
in front of the other until he was tucked away in his window seat, his backpack
that held everything he now owned under the seat in front of him.
The
last thing he expected was the flood of emotions that slammed into him the
moment the plane was in the air: Relief at not being caught this time and dragged
back to Bruce’s condo—to be beaten and starved for weeks until he begged for
mercy and promised he’d never try to leave again. Sadness for the minuscule
amount of love he rarely received that he was now losing. Panic, frustration,
and self-loathing…why? Now that he was finally close enough to the light at the
end of the tunnel to flip the switch, did he really have the strength and
courage to do so? How would he live? Hell, where
would he live? He was an eighteen-year-old with no job, no home, no family or friends,
and the few thousand dollars he’d managed to save over the past twelve months
wouldn’t go far. He’d left his wallet in his locker at work with everything
except his ID and Social Security card still inside. He’d removed the Sim card
from his iPhone, stomped on it, and then flushed it down the toilet. His
backpack held several changes of clothes, toiletries, a well-worn copy of Pride
and Prejudice, and a cheap knockoff MP3 player he’d picked up at a shop in the
airport since he’d left his iPhone in the cab, on purpose.
Reaching
up, Shannon pulled the hood of his jacket over his head and leaned his forehead
against the cool glass window, staring down at the specks of light as the plane
climbed higher into the sky, carrying him farther away from Seattle. Tears
blurred his vision, but he welcomed them. Finally, he was free.

Check out the first book in the series, Survivor…

Taylor Langford’s world is torn apart when he is only thirteen years old—his parents killed, leaving him alone and orphaned. With no living relatives, he’d certainly be another statistic if not for the intervention of the policeman who found Taylor in the crawl space where his mother hid him that fateful night. Despite the tragedy and resulting anguish in his life, Taylor knows how lucky he is.

Frank Moore is a rookie with the Dallas Police Department when he and his partner answer a call in Devonshire, one of the city’s more affluent neighborhoods. They think the young boy in various pictures throughout the home has been kidnapped until they find him, shaken but alive. Officer Moore recognizes the pain in the kid’s eyes, having lost his own mother to cancer when he was just a boy. He steps in, making sure Taylor is placed with a loving foster family. Over the years, Frank becomes a permanent fixture in Taylor’s life.

A decade later, the case remains unsolved and the once gangly, uncertain teenager is now a college graduate who knows exactly what he wants. He’s coming home to the man that helped mold and shape his life, the man he’s loved for as long as he can remember, Frank Moore. But Taylor isn’t the only person returning to Dallas, and while Frank is distracted by his own conflicting feelings and the new bond growing between the two, the past creeps up on them, determined to finish what was started ten years earlier.

A note from the author…

I hope you enjoy Frank and Taylor’s story. It’s been a long road to get them settled, but I’m happy with where this story has taken them. When I started this book, the intent was to write a stand-alone story, but that has changed. Characters continually evolve throughout the writing process, and there are several characters in the book that want to tell their story. I’ve grown especially fond of Rory and I can’t wait to write his book, which will take us back to when he first joined the Bureau, and continue on to his happy ever after.

Please be advised: This is a May/December romance, and as in life, there are sexual situations that take place prior to the main characters finding their way to one another. This is not gratuitous; it is meant to show character growth and self-realization. There is absolutely no cheating.

Cate Ashwood delivers a sweet, sexy friends to lovers story with All He Ever Needed. This was one of those feel-good stories that was fun to read, I totally fell for these guys and their relationship.
Ethan and Jase have been best friends for a long time, they have a great friendship and are always there for each other. That’s why Jase drops everything when he learns that Ethan’s long term relationship with Allison has ended. He’s there to rescue him from the breakup pain and the two head to the cabin his family owns, a place where they would spend summers together when they were younger. It seems like the perfect place to deal with things. As Ethan and Jase spend time together there, Ethan reveals the true reason for the breakup, he comes out and tells Jase he is gay.
I love the relationship between Ethan and Jase! Their friendship is great and for me I could just feel the love between them, even before things turn romantic. I have to admit that Jase’s quick interest in Ethan surprised me a little, it was like once Ethan reveals his sexuality it triggered something in Jase as well. But, it worked for me, I think Cate does a good job of building on the connection these two have always had.
There isn’t a lot of angst in this book, there’s a little drama that I expected and it’s a  natural part of their journey and I really liked how it was handled. I really loved both of these characters, as well as the supporting characters, Ethan and Jase made my heart happy. This is definitely one of my favorites from Cate Ashwood, I didn’t want to put it down once I started reading!

Where do you go when your home is no longer a safe place?

Alex is about to turn eighteen and is firmly in the closet. He’s been biding his time, waiting to escape to uni, and finally come out away from the oppressive influence of his homophobic father. When he flunks his exams, he’s stuck in the small town of Porthladock—and what’s worse is that he’s working for his dad. The only thing that makes it bearable is Cam.

Cam’s comfortable with his bisexuality, but he doesn’t broadcast it. Young, free, and single, his social life revolves around playing rugby and hanging out with his mates. He’s attracted to Alex, but with the six-year age gap, Cam’s wary of getting involved. Plus, he thinks Alex needs a friend more than he needs a lover, and as their friendship grows, Cam decides he’s not willing to risk ruining it for casual sex.

When Alex’s dad finds out about his sexuality, Alex is suddenly both jobless and homeless. He finds work at Rainbow Place, the local LGBT-friendly café and Cam lets Alex stay in his flat for a while. But Alex would rather be sleeping in Cam’s bed than on his sofa. With them both living under one roof, their feelings for each other grow stronger, and the sexual tension is hard to ignore. Will giving in to it ruin their friendship and complicate things for Alex even more?

Although this book is part of a linked series, it has a satisfying happy ending, and can be enjoyed as a standalone.

Safe Place is the second book in this series, but it can be read as a stand alone, although the first book is a great read as well. This book is a slow burn, friends to lovers story featuring Cam and Alex and I really enjoyed their story!

When we first meet Alex he is 17 and trying to finish school and prepare for university. He is gay but still in the closet because his father is severely homophobic. He can’t wait to escape to university where he plans to come out and live the life he has always wanted to. He hangs out at Rainbow Place for a safe place to be, and that is where he meets Cam, a rugby player that just totally catches his attention. The two hit it off right from the start but when Cam learns who is father is, he puts the breaks on things, wanting to be friends to protect Alex. When Alex’s dreams of heading off to school don’t come true he is faced with new choices, and when his father accidentally finds out about his sexuality he can’t go home and ends up staying with Cam. The two try to be friends but their chemistry and real feelings hover just beneath the surface.

Jay Northcote does a great job creating that just there sexual tension and more between these two! It’s clear that both of these men want more, but as their journey goes on, it’s not just more in the bedroom they are both really looking for. Yes, this is a romance but it also really felt like a journey of self discovery for both of these guys. It is about coming to terms with, and welcoming, what it is that they really want in life. I really liked both of these guys and felt for what they went through. Yes, their mixed signals can be a bit frustrating but it’s a part of their story. There are also great secondary characters that really make this story fun. I loved the bits of Seb in there and I’m really curious to see if we will get more about Dylan! A great addition to this series, one that will make your heart happy!

Review

4 – 4-.5 Stars

All for You is another great read from Andrew Grey! I always know when I pick up one of his books I won’t be disappointed and this book is a great example of why I love his words and characters. Reggie is the new sheriff of a small town, he’s gay and he doesn’t hide it but he doesn’t necessarily advertise it either. Especially in this conservative town. Willy is the son of Reverend Gabriel, who is known for his hard beliefs and running the town, he expects people to obey, but Willy is tired of living that life. He knows he is gay but is afraid of what will happen if his father finds out. A chance meeting between Reggie and Willy leads to much more than either man ever expected, but do they stand a chance together?

I loved these characters so much, right from the start. Reggie and Willy are so very different and seem like an unlikely couple, but I loved them together. Reggie is so confident and protective, not just of Willy but the city he is supposed to protect and Willy is young and naive but he is finding his way, especially with Reggie’s strength behind him. While there is a bit of back and forth between them, it’s pretty clear to see that these two are just meant to be. I especially loved seeing Willy’s confidence grow, finally understanding who he wants to be and standing up for himself.

Andrew Grey adds a good amount of drama in this story as well as Reggie, and Willy, try to find out some of the darker things happening in their small community. I enjoyed following that side of the story as well! A great read that showcases the power of love!

Excerpt

The reverend stood straight and met Reggie’s gaze. “And you feel free to do the same. My office and church are always open.”

“That’s great to know.” Reggie waited while the reverend looked to his left, and a man who had been sitting on one of the benches joined him.

Willy. It was Willy from the bar. Reggie opened his mouth to say something when the reverend turned back to him.

“Sheriff, this is my son, William.”

Willy looked even more scared than he had sitting at that table between the two rats. He was pale, his eyes downcast and his right hand shaking a little. Jesus, he was Reverend Gabriel’s son. Reggie was willing to bet that the reverend was not one of those new age, more enlightened men of the cloth. Somehow he didn’t think Reverend Gabriel had any sort of live-and-let-live attitude about gay people.

“It’s good to meet you.” Reggie extended his hand, and Willy blinked, seeming to realize that his life wasn’t going to come to an end.

“You too, sir.” They shook hands.

“What do you do?” Reggie asked.

Reverend Gabriel cleared his throat. “William will be following in my footsteps. He and I have spoken at length regarding his future, and we have come to an understanding.”

William didn’t argue, but he didn’t agree either.

“Have a good day, Sheriff.” Father and son left the station, and Reggie turned to the others, who were all watching him with wide eyes.

“Is something wrong?” he asked the room, and they all immediately returned to their work, so Reggie went back to his office. A throat clearing nervously drew his gaze up from his desk. “Yes, Marie?”

“Umm.” She now had that scared rabbit look. “I have the memos done.” She handed them to him and looked outside the room. “You… I…. Well… I’m going to miss you.”

Reggie narrowed his eyes. “Where am I going?”

“He… the reverend… well, he pretty much decides what happens here. People listen to him, and so do the town leaders. They’ll fire you if he says so.” She quivered like a leaf. “And you were doing such good things here already.”

“Don’t worry, Marie. Nothing of the kind is going to happen. First thing, I’m very good at what I do and will build a competent and well-run sheriff department if I have to do it from the ground up. And second, I have a sister who is married to the governor’s son. I can get a message to Sacramento that will be listened to within the capitol faster than the reverend can pass out communion wafers. That’s part of the reason I’m here.” Reggie leaned back in the chair. “I never use that connection unless I have to, which is part of the reason it’s very effective when I do. So don’t worry.” He looked over the memos, approved them, and handed them back. “Please get them to everyone today. Thank you.”

One thing was for certain—no one was going to get away with bullying him.

“I will, and there’s a call that just came in.” She handed him the details, and he got up and left the office, heading out to the scene of an apparent motorcycle race.

COVER & SYNOPSIS REVEAL

HateNotesTITLE2.png

A standalone romance novel published by Montlake Romance

By: New York Times Bestselling Authors Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward

Release Date: Tuesday, November 6, 2018

SYNOPSIS:

It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress.

Something blue.

I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old.”

Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true.

The name embossed on the blue stationery: Reed Eastwood, obviously the most romantic man who ever lived. I also discovered he’s the most gorgeous. If only my true-love fantasies had stopped there. Because I’ve since found out something else about Mr. Starry-Eyed.

He’s arrogant, cynical, and demanding. I should know. Thanks to a twist of fate, he’s my new boss. But that’s not going to stop me from discovering the story behind his last love letter. A love letter that did not result in a happily ever after.

But that story is nothing compared to the one unfolding between us. It’s getting hotter, sweeter, and more surprising than anything I could have imagined.

Something new.

But I have no idea how this one is going to end . . .

~Lys, I Love Story Time
Are you ready for my newest romance?
DETAILS:
TITLE: MORE OF YOU
SERIES: A Confessions of the Heart Stand-Alone Novel
RELEASE DATE: September 10th, 2018
My daddy warned me never to fall for a boy like Jace Jacobs . . .
The second I saw him walk through the door, I knew he was trouble.
A gorgeous rebel with a bad attitude and a huge chip on his shoulder.
My heart warned me. I didn’t listen. I saw something protective and good beneath the fierce, tough exterior.
I fell hard and fast.
He promised we’d be together forever, and then left me with a broken heart.
Now, ten years later, Jace Jacobs is standing at my door.
Sexier than he’s ever been.
Provocative and commanding.
Successful and powerful.
The man I always knew he would become.
But I promised myself I’d never lose my heart to him again.
Even time couldn’t dim our chemistry. One glance of his intense eyes, and I become weak. One
brush of his hand, and he brings me to my knees.
Little do I know, Jace holds the key to everything I’ve lost and everything that threatens my future.
Now he will either save me, or he will break me all over again . . .
More of You – a Confessions of the Heart second-chance, stand-alone romance

Jenn Review

5 Stars

More of You is a heart-wrenching second chance romance, this is why I love second chance stories! Young love that was supposed to last forever, but Jace walked away from Faith and changed everything. Years later, he’s back, standing right in front of her determined to keep her and her daughter safe. Faith vows not to let him near her heart again, she’s done with that pain, plus she has plenty she’s dealing with currently.

A.L. Jackson delivers an emotional, passionate and raw journey with this book. It was everything I’d hoped for and more and the surprises kept coming and I couldn’t put it down. My heart broke for both Jace and Faith and the life they should have had together, and then for the lives that they now live. The danger, the passion, and the love in this story was just the perfect combination. I adored the way it all comes together, still raw but beautiful and definitely one of my favorite books from A.L. Jackson! A fantastic start to a new series, I can’t wait to see what is next!

Excerpt

“Let me take care of you.” The words grated from my tongue.
She blinked at me. “Why did you really come here, Jace? After all this time? After all these years? What is
it you want?”
You.
“I need to be here. I tri—”
The confession locked in my throat, and I swallowed hard, forcing it out between the constriction I could
feel baring down on every cell in my body.
“I tried to stay away. But I couldn’t. Not knowing what’s happening. Not knowing what you’ve been
through.”
Not knowing just how fucking deep Joseph had gotten. Not knowing the lengths those assholes might go
to. I was getting a better and better idea of what that might be.
Protectiveness swelled.
An anger so intense I saw black curled through my muscles.
I could feel it, a wire tripping somewhere inside me, one of those pieces I’d been trying to keep contained,
held back, ripped free.
No way in hell was I backing down from this. No way in hell was I walking away from her.
“I’m moving in.”
She reared back. “What?”
“You heard what I said.”
A heated anger rushed in to take over the helplessness. “Well, I thought I did . . . and what I think I just
heard you say was you’re movin’ in here, and that’s not goin’ to happen.”
“You need someone here to look after you. Besides . . . there are what? Eight rooms here? You will hardly
notice me, and someone needs to be here to watch over things.”
“And you think that job lands on you?” It was all a rushed horror as she pushed back her chair and
stumbled to her feet.
Energy flashed.
So intense my chest tightened.
Painfully.
Protectiveness pulsing out. Filling everything.
“I think that’s exactly what it is.”
Harsh, hoarse laughter rocked from her, and she was biting at her lip like she wanted to bite back her
words.
“You are the last person I want movin’ in here. I already told you, all of this is too hard. It feels too
complicated. It’s hard enough you bein’ outside. You want to take up the inside, too?”
I edged closer, breathing in all that intensity.
Taking it on as my own.
Standing next to the girl felt like inhaling life.
Did she think this wasn’t going to be brutal for me, too?
My voice quieted, though it was hard as stone. “You aren’t safe here. You’re scared. You can’t deny that.”
I edged closer, and she edged back. She hit the wall behind her.
She was so close.
So damned close I wanted to take one step closer and feel all of her. What it was like to be against that
skin.
Her words were so rough she could barely force them out. “Then I’ll call my daddy to come and stay.”
My fingers were back to toying with a lock of her hair, my head angled to the side. “Let me take care of
you, Faith. Let me be the one.”
“Jace—”
“Please . . . let me do this for you. I’m your family, whether you like it or not.”
“This is a terrible idea,” she whispered. Like it was her last plea.
“It might be the only good one I’ve ever had.”

The Final book in the Montana Series

Jenn Review

5 Stars

I have really enjoyed this series, loved every one of these couples and I think this may be the most emotional of the series! I was hooked on Rob and Aaron’s story right from the start and man did RJ Scott deliver the feels! Rob heads to Crooked Tree Ranch to try to find a life for his two young nephews after discovering that his sister has died and he is now their guardian. He meets Aaron and there’s attraction and a connection, but he doesn’t have time for that. He is there to convince Justin that the boys belong there. Aaron is persistent though and won’t let Rob walk away from him, even if it’s just for a good time.

I love Aaron’s good heart, he’s such a wonderful guy and shows Rob that there can be happiness in life, even as grumpy and resistant as Rob is. There is a lot of emotion in this story as Rob’s true struggles are revealed my heart broke for him. He’s led a cold life, trying to keep good people safe and when he finally finds the person who can make him happy, along with his adorable two nephews, he doesn’t think he can actually have that happiness. And then it’s time to reveal his truth to Aaron, and Justin, Aaron won’t give up on him though, and truly stands by his side.

I adored this book and the emotional roller coaster it was and I so wanted Rob and Aaron to find the HEA they deserved. I don’t want to spoil the story, so I’m going to say that this book and this whole series is absolutely fantastic and one of my favorites! I’m sad that this is the last book in the series, but I loved the way it all came together for all of these characters!

Chapter 1

Rob Brady knew three things. His sister was dead, he was the guardian to her two boys, and he was stuck in Hell.

And why am I fixating on Hell?

Oh yeah, the room, the kids, the crushing grief of absolutely fucking everything.

If Hell was a small, airless room with no windows, a flickering light, and two utterly silent children staring at him as if he’d personally murdered their mother.

Oh, and a thin-lipped woman from Child Protection Services looking at him the same way.

Of course, he hadn’t killed his sister because he only ever took out the bad guys. With ruthless efficiency, he’d carved out the poison in the US and kept its citizens safe. Most people would’ve described him as an assassin, but he was more than that; the last resort when normal lines of defense failed.

At least, he used to be until he caught a bullet things went pear-shaped.

“How long have they been on their own?” Rob Brady didn’t know what else to ask. He wanted to be angry with the DCFS but how could he be? Instead, he wavered between anger and guilt, and it was guilt that was winning.

“Mr. Brady, they were never on their own.”

“My sister—” He stopped talking when he realized he was just about to state how long ago his sister died when her children were sitting right there in the room. Lowering his tone, he then turned to Sylvia from the DCFS, efficient and steady, and just ever so slightly pissed at him. “A year. They’ve been on their own a year.”

Sylvia inhaled sharply and clutched her folders to her chest.

“And for a little less than that, we have tried to track down their uncle and been unable to find anything.”

“I know. I get that.” Anyone trying to find him would reach several dead-ends whichever way they went. First of all the navy and his time in the SEALs, then when he joined the team combatting mainland terrorism. At every turn, his existence was classified, and in the end, he’d become nothing more than a ghost. “That isn’t my point.”

Sylvia tapped a finger on the files in a steady rhythm. “Then please, can you enlighten me as to what exactly is your point?”

He opened the door and gestured for her to go into the hallway, following her out and shutting it behind them. He had questions and didn’t want to ask them in front of his nephews.

“Why has no one adopted them? Why don’t they have a forever home with a new family?”

“Because your sister’s intention was that you would take the boys. It’s explicitly stated in every legal form we have, and it was her dying wish.”

“But she couldn’t have known I would ever come back. Or that I was even alive…” He floundered for something to say. He’d come back to town on the off chance he’d see what was left of his extended family from a distance, and instead, he’d learned his sister was dead, after losing a battle with cancer, that there was no father in the picture, and that his nephews were in the system.

“Nonetheless, they are legally your responsibility. Given you worked so hard to get authorization from Governor Chilton, something I’ve never seen before, along with psych evals that no normal person would have access to, you are now in a position to leave with your nephews.”

The minute he’d heard about the boys, he’d realized he needed to get things done. He’d called in favors, had people who owed him create a backstory so tight he seemed like Mother fucking Teresa, and now he was here. His nephews needed a home, and he thought on his feet because he only had another three good months to put anything in place for them. He wanted them looked after, safe, and so he had one more mission before leaving. He’d have to delay spending his last weeks on a beach in Aruba, sipping cocktails and sleeping with anything that moved.

“I can take them today?” he asked. A small, hesitant part of him wanted her to say no, that there were more details to be ironed out.

“Yes.”

“Now?”

“Yes.” She pursed her lips as if it were against her better judgment. But he’d passed all the checks, and the references were sound, he had the governor’s endorsement. It was done.

“Okay then.”

He pushed back into the room. Bran, the older of his two nephews, stared at him steadily. Toby, the youngest, sniffled and gripped his brother hard. Any ordinary uncle would’ve hugged them close and told them everything was going to be okay. But he wasn’t a regular uncle, and he swore Bran knew that because there was accusation in his eyes.

You don’t even know us; he seemed to be saying.

Was it right for Rob to be taking them from their new foster home? They’d been placed with a family currently fostering six kids, and on the surface, everything seemed okay. He’d done his due diligence, and the parents checked out, but there was a weird vibe in the house, a rule of fear, and he didn’t like it.

He’d stayed alive this long by listening to his instinct, and his gut told him he should take Bran and Toby, that he was the boys’ kin. He also knew where he could find them a better home. In the mountains, with rivers and horses, and a whole group of people who would look out for them.

“Everything will be okay.” Was he reassuring himself or the boys?

If anyone who knew him had seen he was being handed two children to take care of, they’d call the cops.

Of course, he could handle the cops. He’d done it before, but the kids would slow him down. Unless he strapped them to his back and—

“Mr. Brady?”

Sylvia talked to him, or at him, and from her expression, she wasn’t impressed he’d stopped listening.

“Sorry, say again?” He glanced at Toby who was sniffling harder and snuggling deeper into his brother. I should go to Toby and…

And what?

Do what? Say what? Scare the kid rigid by being all up in his face?

“We need an address for our records. Unless you reside with Governor Chilton?” The last she added sarcastically.

Oh yeah, a house, an address, he probably needed those. He’d managed to fool them with his credentials so far, and the recommendation he’d gotten from the governor for a favor owed had cut through the red tape. The address was easy; it was the only place he had on his to-do list, the one where the kids could maybe have a home. He just needed to hire a lawyer, update his will, get Justin to agree to his proposal, and he’d be able to leave without any worries.

I felt like this book really was a journey through life. It’s not just a romance read, it’s so much more than that. This is a story about growing up, learning about who you are, falling in love, having your heart broken and once again learning about who are you.

When we first meet Owen, he’s 19 and in the closet, afraid of his father finding out that he is gay. He has his best friend Andy,  and then he meets Jack. He quickly falls in love, but Jack is deep in the closet too so it doesn’t make it easy for these two to experience love. When Jack disappears from Owen’s life he experiences that heart break. But life goes on and so does he, and his still has Andy by his side.

This story was slower than I expected, it really was a journey of self discovery for Owen and once I got used to the pace, I really enjoyed it. I felt myself riding the ups and downs with Owen, my heart aching for him and hoping that he would his happy. It was the last third of this story that really did it for, I totally fell in love and wanted to cheer for Owen. He finally finds what he’s been looking for and it made my heart so freaking happy. It wasn’t exactly what I expected when I started this book but Looking Forward was a wonderful, touching read that I definitely recommend!

EXCERPT

I shook even more as I picked up the handset and dialed the ten digits for his area code and phone number. The call wouldn’t connect. I feared for a moment that he had purposely given me the wrong number. Maybe he didn’t want me calling him after all. Then I remembered, since this was long distance, I had to dial the number one first.

I laid the receiver back into the cradle and scrubbed my hand through my hair, willing myself to calm down. Jack wouldn’t be able to see my fear from over the phone, but there was every likelihood that he would be able to hear it.

I took the receiver out of the cradle and dialed the eleven digits. My heart beat faster as the phone rang, and I almost chickened out and hung up.

Almost.

The other end was picked up on the fourth ring. A woman answered, clearly out of breath. “Hello.”

I was momentarily confused. In my head, he would answer, and we would spend my break catching up. I had not expected someone else to answer, especially not a woman.

What if she was his girlfriend? How would I explain myself?

“Hello?” she repeated.

He wouldn’t have given me his number if he didn’t think it would be safe for me to call. Or at least, that’s what I reasoned.

“Is Jack in?”

“Yeah. Hold on a sec.”

Then I heard her muffle the mouthpiece, but I was still able to hear her call his name.

Soon enough, I heard a voice that I recognized coming from the other end. “Hello?”

“Jack?” I said, still slightly confused, and hoping that I hadn’t just caused some problem for him by calling.

“Speaking.”

“Jack, it’s Owen.”

I heard his breath catch on the other end of the phone line, and there was a second or two of delay. Panic started to bloom. This was a mistake. He wouldn’t remember me. Why would he? I was just some kid from Toledo that he’d met in a bar weeks ago. I’d allowed too much time to pass and had lost any chance I had, if I’d had any at all. “Owen?”

I twisted the phone cord around my finger, an old habit I’d developed when I was nervous on the phone. That panic came full force at his question. He didn’t remember me. This call was pointless. “From Toledo,” I reminded him.

Jack chuckled. “I remember. I don’t meet too many Owens.”

Some of that panic eased off but didn’t dissipate entirely. This could still go horribly wrong very quickly. I still didn’t know what I was doing calling him. What if that connection I had felt the night before Thanksgiving was all in my head? I’d be the fool that had placed the call. He’d talk about me to all his friends, tell them about this little homo that was stalking him from the other side of the state. They’d all laugh at my expense, and I’d never know. Or he could tell Andy, and he’d never let me forget how I’d basically come on to his straight cousin.

Yet, he had given me his number. And those words. I reread the napkin. Can you feel it?

I paused, pulling in a deep breath and slowly exhaling. I could do this. This wasn’t a big deal if I didn’t make it one. “No, I can’t imagine you do. It’s not a very common name.”

“No, it’s not. It’s very memorable.”

“I was actually named after my grandfather, if you can believe that.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. Sort of a family tradition. My father is named after his grandfather, and my grandfather after his. It’s weird.”

“No, not really. It’s actually kind of cool. Like, legacy. You have a connection to your family that will never go away.”

“I never thought of it like that. I’ve honestly always hated the name.” And wasn’t that a total bitch. If my father ever found out that his only son was gay, he would totally disown me, and I’d still have this name.

“You shouldn’t. It’s unique. It sets you apart. How many people have you known named Jack?”

I laughed. “That’s true. A lot.”

“Exactly my point. In a world full of Jacks, be an Owen.”

Why did that warm my heart so much?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I’m the oldest of three, from the Glass Capital of the world, Toledo Ohio.

Don’t laugh too hard.

I’ve dreamed of writing since I was eleven years old when I wrote a truly awful Choose-Your-Own-Adventure. It sold exactly zero copies. I think my mother may have a copy lying around somewhere. Mothers keep that kind of thing.

Through junior high and high school, I wrote a number of short stories, one actually published in the first (and only) issue of his high school’s literary magazine.

Life took control shortly thereafter, as it often does, and the dream of writing was put on hold. Then, in November of 2016, I took a leap of faith, and began writing my first novel as part of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) competition. The goal of the competition is to write a 50,000-word novel in a thirty-day period.

I failed.

However, on the advice of a friend, I “pushed through”. And so, in September of 2017, my first novel was published.

This was such a fun read and great part of the Naughty Princess series. I really liked Ariel and the hot mess that she is, along with Eric and his wonderful prince hotness. There is something special in the way Tara Sivec can create humor and romance in a story and deliver the feels at the same time and this book is proof of that!

I really enjoyed the push and pull between these two and just when you think they may finally get it together, there are some challenges for these two. One of my favorite things about this series is the play on the Disney movies and this book totally nails it! I can’t count how many songs I hummed as I read this book and yet it was original and fun and it’s own story. I have really enjoyed this series and I know it is going to be one that I revisit to laugh and feel and swoon over again and again. Another great read from one of my very favorites, Tara Sivec! Can’t wait to see what she does next!
